question about social groups

I'm still not completely used to the new set-up of these forums. One thing I've been wondering about...what are SOCIAL GROUPS? I keep seeing them, but I'm not sure how they are supposed to be different than any other thread. I mean, obviously, they are meant to be social, but are these all kept in one place? Are they just capitalized to make it easier to find? As an example, I notice that the Book a Week thread is not labeled as a Social Group, but the Discussing Progressive Christianity is. Is that just the preference of the person who started the thread. Maybe this has been around a long time, but I've never noticed it until the recent changes. So I'm just curious, I guess.

On the old board there was a separate area for these groups. If you were interested you joined and you might or might not participate. It was almost like a mini board within a board (oh no, why is my ADD making me think of a dweam within a dweam? lol) Anyway, this board doesn't have social groups set up yet, though "they" say it will happen eventually. In the meantime, people are wanting those groups, so making a thread and calling it that is the best alternative for now. I think the all caps serve two purposes: 1. If you're interested in the group, you can easily find it by looking for all caps and seeing which one is "your" group, and 2. If you're not interested in a group you can easily scroll past the thread, because the all caps SOCIAL GROUP will tell you that's what it is.
