Does anyone NOT like MCT?

We weren't big fans. This kids listened and participated fine but didn't really love it. We prefer a more straight-forward approach to grammar. I think we will to the poetry book though, that one seems to have potential. My kids were 4th and 3rd grade and we did Island level.

Thanks for your feedback. The only two things that concern me about the program is that it looks teacher intensive and I can't figure out how to implement it. The lack of a schedule makes my head dizzy. I want things laid out for me.

I am kind of the same way, I have ordered it twice and ended up not using it twice because of that. I feel if I only had my son I would be able to implement it but with two other younger children it just seemed like it wouldn't get done. It does seem like a solid program and I would still recommend it for some but I think while I liked it in theory when it came to the practice it wasn't working out.

Gasp, thanks, FP!

I had the books for several weeks as I grappled with the lack of schedule, but decided to jump in with both feet anyway last week. Ds is not liking it much. But he's reluctant about any language program, so I settle for a grumpy "tolerable" from him. What I see now, this early on, is that the idea that adjectives "modify" the picture of the noun he has in his brain, is startling and interesting to him. I appreciate that MCT takes the time to present these ideas in such a clear and interesting way. I think this could be the sort of curriculum that grows in appeal rather than an instant love-at-first-sight kind of thing. It's looking promising at this early juncture. Good luck, OP!

MCT is a teacher intensive program, it's true. But I think the discussion that is assumed throughout the program really does add a lot of understanding.

It's not for everyone... it requires a fair amount of time and is not independent. It doesn't cover all the mechanics and usage sorts of things that many grammar programs include. I do have mixed feelings, and it would be easier *not* to do it... but quite honestly, we keep being drawn to it. :)

While I don't *dislike* it, I don't really get it. DS is happiest reading it (and the teachers guide) on his own and raising the discussion points with me, rather than the other way around. It's a nice extra here, but doesn't really have a place that it sits in our day.

My biggest beef with it is that I don feel like the books are particularly "beautiful" or high quality as people say. I feel like they are crazy over priced. There are typos.

I expected better for the money.

For usage, I haven't found it teacher intensive at all. We sit at the table and read it together (he has the studen book, I have the teacher book). I wish it was better organized with the writing assignments IN the chapter with the teachers notes.

Thanks for these, somehow I didn't come up with them when I searched. It sounds like MCT may not be the right fit for us next year. I'm still drawn to it though, maybe for the year after... :tongue_smilie:
