Iskra Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 I am looking for a geography website, organized by country, where there is a list, for each country, of links for online games and kid websites that help you learn about that country and a list of living books about that country, music etc. Does something like this exist? We are spending about a week or 2 per country and we want to cover all the countries of the world in this way. My kids retain best if they read engaging books about the country and play games online, so it would be neat if a website or book existed that contains lists and links that we can just go to, for each country (basically I'm thinking kinda like the SOTW Activity books that has all the additional resources lists for each chapter of history, in my case I need something like that for each country of today) Quote
Chelli Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 I don't know of a website like that, but there are some books like that: Galloping the Globe Expedition Earth (world geography curriculum download) Trail Guide to World Geography Quote
Donna A. Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Around the World in 180 Days, but this is geared more for older children (middle school and up). MFW Exploring Countries & Cultures, but this a "complete" curriculum and would be hard to separate out just the geography portion. Just mentioning both of these since I don't know the ages of your children or whether you want it to be Christian-based or not. :) Quote
Iskra Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 The ages are 8 and 6. I have heard of the curricula you guys mentioned, but I thought they were more like ideas about doing crafts and cooking and lessons and such. I really just want lists of online games and living books organized by country. Do those curricila contain such lists? Quote
Iskra Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 national geographic has a website that corresponds to the atlas for young explorers where you can enter the page number of a country (or state) from the atlas and it supposed to give you links for games, further study, videos and pictures. We tried that, but for Hawaii (which was the 1st state we wanted to study) there were no book suggestions and no kid websites and games, just a couple of photos of a volcano and an article and that was it. I was dissapointed that it was so sparse, but I'm sure something like that must exist elsewhere on the web and someone on here knows about it. It just not possible that no one has though of this before. So bump, and bump to this thread. Quote
Esse Quam Videri Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I've been researching for our geography study next year, and here are some geography living book lists I've come across on the boards: http://www.homeschoolshare.com/master_geography_index.php http://aussiepumpkinpatch.com/uploads/pdf/FIAR%20by%20Seasons,%20Geography,%20Themes.pdf http://myfamilyiseternal.blogspot.com/2010/07/literature-based-geography.html Also, here is a really inexpensive geography study similar to those listed. Mom2pandc Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I'm using this blog's resources as a staring point http://www.homeschoolcreations.com/Geography.html I'm also adding in continent maps before we start individual countries. I get a couple library books on each country to use in addition to the online resources and printables on that site. Plus, since it doesn't cover every country, I found printables on many of the others here http://www.worksheetworks.com/geography.html Quote
kagmypts Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Here are a couple links: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/Geography.htm http://www.playkidsgames.com/problem_solveGames.htm Do you plan to study all 195 (or thereabout) countries??? Quote
Iskra Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 Thanks for the links everyone, and yes we plan to cover all 195 of them (I thought it was 196). We are in no hurry though. It can take however long it takes. I figured about 30 countries per year. I realize that there is a lot more info or some and almost none on others. We'll at least look at the map in our atlas for each one and notice the major geo features that way. My kids love looking at maps, I just want to add the living books and games to make the info stick more, since they both love reading and playing games. Quote
Alessandra Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Material World: A Global Family Portrait is pretty good, although it doesn't cover every country. Quote
