mommymilkies
I really need to finish my degree. I have taken a long break since having kids 3-5 and I am determined to finish my degree now. I would like a degree where I could work part time outside (like for parks, etc.) or to teach at colleges part time. I am a huge environmentalist and wildlife lover. I spent half my life growing up camping. I would like to do something with this. But I would really prefer a hands on, mostly outdoors job. All three of these are options to me. I only have one bio class left and then the core credits (I was mostly Pre-med). I can finish this all online and so that is not a problem. But does anyone know someone with these majors and can tell me likely job opportunities or, well, anything? I'm leaning away from ES because I want less theoretical research and more hands on with nature. :D
mommymilkies
Wow. $9.89 an hour. That's worse than my last job where I didn't even have a B.S.! Really, I'm not looking for big bucks, but a paid part time position might encourage dh to let us move away from here. ;)
Candid
Yes, my youngest wants to be a marine biologist, I try to temper him with the idea of picking some other major up that will improve his job chances. Wildlife is not a good career field. You might be better if you need money to do some kind of medical lab work. Or physical therapy. BUT check your local job market it that is where you are going to look for work. Find out what is available.
mommymilkies
We will have to move no matter what. There are no jobs here. I used to be a lab tech, and I don't want to again. I like working places where am outside, or at least have windows. ;). PT is something I considered, but I need a part time program and the aren't any PT programs at all within 3+ hours of here. Why is wildlife not a good career field?
Candid
Why is wildlife not a good career field? Too many people want to do it and it has a low threshold of skill to do which means the forces of supply and demand drive the price down. Couple that with a low demand for it and you have a low salary range.
Pam L in Mid Tenn
Most wildlife positions are full time research jobs. They are not going to be the lowest paying jobs, but they are also not going to be "good" pay either. There just arent any part time wildlife jobs. mommymilkies
:( I really love the field, too. Sigh. Maybe I'll just have to wait and hope we can move close to another university someday.
