ereks mom
If so, should we see the 1965 original movie or the 2002 remake?
regentrude
Yes. Reading the book would be even better - after all, Pasternak got the Nobel prize for it. I have not seen the remake, but I like the original film (I am very wary of remakes, have yet to see one that is better than the original)
Jane in NC
Another vote for the book! I may be the odd man out, but I like the 2002 BBC version. It is bleaker than the earlier film --suits the book just a bit better. Romantics may prefer the older film.
Candid
Man, I pick the older movie with Barbara Streisdan over the book! I tried reading it as a teen girl and it was one of few nonstarters for me.

Occasionally
It's Julie Christie, not Barbra Streisand. My parents *almost* named me Lara, but chickened out. I'm partial to the original movie.

Well, I didn't think she played Lara, but their daughter Tanya Komarovskaya, but I looked it up and the girl is played by Rita Tushingham so not Streisand. elegantlion
My mom and I bonded over the original movie. It's cinematically very beautiful, the music is wonderful. Omar Sharif was one of my first movie star crushes. I have not read the book. However, for you, I would make sure you are comfortable with the plot line of the personal lives of the character, if you are not familiar with it. You can read a good summation here. http://en.wikipedia....r_Zhivago_(film)
Rhonda in TX
I love the movie, and it's a great picture of the Russian Revolution. However, Dr. Zhivago's relationship with Lara is not something to be admired, in my opinion. He was married, and to a very nice woman (from what I see in the movie - maybe the book is different). If I remember right, the newer one is more um, upfront, about the love relationships going on ...I don't remember any "skin", but the older move is gentler in that regard. When I was a teen, I wanted to slap Zhivago around--pick a woman already and get on with it! ;)

Guess what my husband's name is ;) Never seen the movie, but had to throw that in there. sorry for hijacking!
J-rap
I love studying that period of history, but I would prefer that my daughter not watch Dr. Zhivago.
