Just made my first batch of sweet tea

I lived in the south for 15 years and never made sweet tea. (Hey, there was always tea to be had!) We've lived in WA for about 15 months now, and I just HAD to have some sweet tea. I didn't have a recipe, so I kind of guessed at a bit of it, but, ahhhh.... so good. :001_wub: I don't think I made it as sweet as true southern tea, but it is still yummy. Just had to share!

My dh is addicted to Chicken Express sweet tea. He buys 1-2 gallons a week. The ratio of sugar to a gallon of tea is two cups. It is like drinking syrup! One local Chicken Express started decreasing the amount of sugar they put in the tea to save money. Dh noticed right away, asked the employees about it, the employees confirmed the reduction, and now he drives 15 minutes further to a different one which puts more sugar in. Cracks me up.

Now that's dedication! My mom always says tea isn't worth drinking if it's not glucose water! Sounds like your DH. :tongue_smilie:

That was one thing I never learned to like while living in the south. I could tolerate grits, but syrupy sweet tastes awful. The most sugar I'll per in per gallon is 2/3 cup and that is pushing it. Dh thinks it isn't sweet that way, but since he refuses to make his own I don't do it any differently.

That's it? When I was waitressing, we used a 1/2 gallon pitcher of sugar for a 3 gallon tea container. It has been ages since I've had a glass of good sweet tea.

I love it and can't have it anymore. I would make my own and it was almost like drinking syrup. Mercy me how I'd love some now.

I know what you mean. I had to stop drinking it because of sugar problems. I finally missed it so much I compromised and started making with *much* less sugar (only a 1/2 cup for a gallon :scared: ) and only drinking a glass a day. Dh usually finishes the rest of the pitcher pretty quickly too, so my one glass a day is often only one glass period! :tongue_smilie:

I live on the Illinois/WIsconsin border and after growing up in Atlanta, I really miss sweet tea. This week we heard Chick-Fil-A is opening up in a neighboring town...I am SO excited to get sweet tea!!!! Making it at home just isn't the same...I think our poor water quality makes a big difference.
