I'll have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd next year and am currently doing CLE LA. I'm looking to possible switch especially with my 1st and 2nd. I'm reading great things about R&S but I would need my 3rd to work more independantly than my 1st and 2nd. That doesn't mean totally hands off. I'm looking into FLL 1 & 2 for my littles because I'm not fond of CLE 1 & 2. I like it for the upper levels (my DS used it for 4th, 5th and 6th) and I'm reading FLL 1 and 2 are more teacher involvement so I would need my 3rd grader to work a little more independantly.

Would R&S would for this scenario or should I just stick with CLE? I don't use the handwriting part of CLE and I'll probably find another Spelling because he needs more help in Spelling than CLE provides. So it's really the grammar part I'd use it for. If you have other suggestions, I'm open to them.

I'm using R&S4 with my 3rd grade. I briefly go over the lesson with him and do some oral exercises. Then I assign the written work for him to do on his own. It doesn't take me much time at all... 5 minutes usually.

Note that this child gets grammar easily. Another child may need more mom involvement.

I've heard of upper level students working independently, but my son isn't there yet. He reads the directions and gets a blank look. I read the directions, and he fully understands.

It isn't supposed to be teacher intensive at all.

Some years ago--I'm thinking late 80s--R&S did a survey of the schools that used its textbooks. Most of those schools were multi-grade, one-room schools, with lone teachers who didn't have time for lecturing and projects and hand-holding. Often they only had time to briefly go over homework and then make the next assignment. So began the revisions of the English and math series, plus new science and history series (the spelling series was already very independent). The student texts contain everything the children need to know; the easier-to-use TMs have reduced-size student texts with the answers, plus optional oral classtime. In situations where the teachers have time to lecture and whatnot, the oral classtime is great, but it is *optional.* (First through third math, and at least first grade reading, require the oral classtime.)

So, yes, your third-grader should be able to work fairly independently.
