A home for their hearts
I'm considering using this with my struggling ds8. He knows almost all of the a-z phonograms however he has trouble blending sounds together on a page. He has to sound out every single word, even if he just read it he still has to sound it out. He is getting better at blending but he still guesses. For example if the word is nap he'll say /n/ /a/ /p/ then he'll say pap, he then he starts guessing and saying sounds that aren't even in the word. So I'm looking at Dancing bears and I'm not sure if I would start him with Bear Necessities or Dancing Bears A.
MamaChristina
In your situation I would start with Dancing Bears A. There are some exercises at the beginning of the book that help children learn to blend, plus they start with other sounds like er, sh, ch, th, or, etc. early on in book A as well. I'm using it with a struggling ds this year and it has really helped.
KathyBC
Have his eyes been checked by a developmental optometrist? Do you think he would be able to recognize any of these symptoms? http://www.childrensvision.com/reading.htm
kitten18
I agree with starting in A. I'm using A with my DS (7). It starts at the beginning with the phonograms.
amazzie
I used A with my 8 year old who was reading like your son is, and it really helped.
