My son will be in 8th grade next year and will be doing Heart of Dakota Revival to Revolution. I am considering adding Writing with Skill and Analytical Grammar. Right now I am planning on spreading out AG over several years . Does this seem like too much? I noticed HOD only schedules their writing program once a week so I was wondering if it would be adding too much. It sounds like WWS is usually done four times a week. Thanks!

Are you doing it instead of R&S and HOD's Writing choice? Probably too much to write daily, as Rev has a lot of writing as does most HOD programs. HOD usually puts writing in other areas. I haven't used Rev yet, but slated to in the fall. As long as you're doing those instead of the choices, I'd say make your schedule as you see fit. But my best guess having done other programs, daily will have you go long on your day. But you could do 2 days or 3. It depends on the writing program and what a day looks like as well.

Yes, this is instead of R&S and HOD's writing choice. Sorry this wasn't clear. My son is efficient and usually finishes his school work in good time. Now if this was my second oldest, it would be a different story. It doesn't matter what I cut from his school work he still can't seem to finish in time, but that's another story. :001_smile:

If he's not having time issues, I can't see a problem. If he ends up with time problems, go with the flow then. Make that the first thing you bypass daily. I have WWS too that we did during then end of CTC. I haven't picked it up again this year, due to other issues we're having, but I didn't find WWS, at least what I did, all that time consuming. Not any more than IEW Medieval anyway. I find it hard sometimes to do writing weekly or even 2 days a week. I prefer smaller daily increments and mainly because they loose their thought processes over that many days' time. I remember often that we had to stop sort of midway and then re-read to try to pick things back up again, which took us even longer.

Thanks, I was wondering if any one else had used WWS with HOD.

I have used HOD and we are currently using WWS but never simultaneously. I think WWS is awesome and should work well if you are replacing the writing program used in RTR. As previous posters mentioned you may need to adjust the writing in the other areas if you find it becomes to much. Personally I prefer WWS to the writing book used in RTR (which dd used last year).

I'm glad to hear that you like WWS. Do you use the Teacher's Manual with it? From the samples, the student manual seems very thorough so I was wondering if the teacher's manual is necessary.

I found the TM to be very helpful as it gives answers to outlining and has guiding questions and answers to how to do the lessons. Best TM I've seen so far with the answers. But beware, it's quite a big book!

Writing has never been one of my strengths, so yes I use the TM. It tells me what questions to ask if the student is not understanding the assignment and that has been so helpful. ETA: The student manual is very thorough but there have still been times when I have needed the TM.

You could always just purchase the Student Manual and then if you find you need the TM order the PDF. Also there are several weeks worth of samples that you can ask PHP to send to you to try. Email pattie@welltrainedmind.com and she will send you the link (which is not available for sharing per PHP request). HTH
