welovetoread
I am wnating to organize our reading books a bit better, so I can have a list of what we have etc. I know there are a few apps that give us the option to organize etc. Do you have a favorite? Or do you use something else to list what is in your library. Chandi
cherimoya
Calibre It's such an awesome app. Someone mentioned it in another thread on this past weekend. I started playing with it and in 2 days time, I have my whole library of ebooks (kindle, ibooks, epub), pdfs all organized. Roughly 1400 books. It's an amazing free open source app.
JumpedIntoTheDeepEndFirst
I've always used BookCollector for our hard copy books. It is great, easy to use and easily portable on smart phones and tablets. I'm intrigued by Calibre for the ebook collection we're building. Thanks for the tip! welovetoread
Great, thank you :) Does book collector allow me to scan the ISBN on a book and make collections etc?
JumpedIntoTheDeepEndFirst
Great, thank you :) Does book collector allow me to scan the ISBN on a book and make collections etc? Yes, you can scan the barcode (they have an app for iPhones-not sure about other smartphones) with a scanner. You can also input books by typing in the ISBN. Making collections are a little more tricky. What are you hoping for by making collections?
FairProspects
I love Bookcrawler. Someone else mentioned it here, and I've scanned or input 450+ books in the last week. It has been amazing to help me see what I already have on my shelves. Every single year so far I've bought repeat books- usually novels or picture books, but no more! Rbsmrter
I second the Bookcrawler recommendation. I've been using it for over a year on my iPad and iPhone. I'm not sure if they have android apps. You can organize by collection or tags. Not sure if its relevant for you but you can load the app on more than one device and sync them over wifi. It's been great in helping me avoid duplicate purchases (sad, but true for me) and organize books according to ages, curriculums, themes, etc.
welovetoread
I guess I should have mentioned that I'm looking to put the app on my IPad. My 10 year old has an obscene amount of horse/vet medicine/animal books. I was hoping to make collections for those and any series we have. At this point just having something to tell me what I already have is great!!! I know I"m buying books I already have etc.

There is the ability to use common subject headings with each book or create custom headings. I think I would just create a custom subject for each series or type of book and use that to sort your collections. Yes, a book can have more than one heading applied to it-so one book could have an entry under horses and one under Billy and Blaze Series. The advantage to this is that it is a resident program and database so if you are at a garage sale or book sale and don't have internet connectivity you can still search your book list. Here is the link to the software (some also available in the AppStore) Collectorz.com The alternative is to create a database in a spreadsheet program, put Numbers on your iPad and export the spreadsheet to your iPad. But this does lack the cover photo and auto search features that I love. I hope this answers some of your questions :)
