Blueridge
Dh and I had the flu last week, and his coughing seems to have turned into a nagging habit which may be bronchitis. Does anybody have a suggestion for something natural (herb concoction, home remedy, etc.) he might try to rid himself of the cough? He wants to try natural things before going to the doctor for a shot lol. Thanks!
Mama Geek
If it is bronchitis, I would think they would give antibiotics rather than a shot. Hot steam like a shower, vic's vapor rub on the chest, an over the counter expectorant might help as well.
thescrappyhomeschooler
I have been taking this to try to prevent myself from getting my sister's hacking cough/flu. It's seems to be working so far.
Blueridge
Thank you. I will get some Vicks, and will make that cough remedy (that a few days ago I posted the same one on my Pinterest board and forgot about it!).
BlueTaelon
This tea works wonders for cough/chest congestion:)
Blueridge
Thanks for the recipe. I had made a half gallon of garlic tea and took most of it myself. Maybe that's why he got worse but I did better. I didn't think to add the lemon, though, so this might be tastier!
redsquirrel
Last time I had bronchitis my family Dr told me that over 70% (? something like that) of bronchitis goes away on its own with no treatment. It is either viral or needs no antibiotics. He gave me a script but asked me not to fill it unless I got worse over the next three days. He was pretty specific about what constituted 'worse'. I did not get worse and after 48 hours was actually starting to be a little bit better. Within a two weeks I was totally better. There are lots of '100 day coughs' that don't warrant antibiotics. Unless it is getting worse then the antibiotics prob won't help. Now, he could go in and get a script for an industrial cough suppressant to help him sleep at night. Sometimes just getting a couple good nights sleep can make all the difference in getting well.
Blueridge
I keep telling him that he is getting better...and that a good, positive attitude is helpful, too (which he does not have at the moment :glare: ) but his coughing is driving him bonkers. Ironically, his co-worker also came down with the flu, and immediately went to the doctor as is his frequent habit. Guess what they prescribed: a steroid shot and antibiotics! Why? And he still has his cough, too. Maybe it's time for some tough love around here. "Alright young man, drink that garlic tea and put that sticky Vicks on, too!" I can hear the whining already... :nopity:
Mama Geek
I have had a sore throat and some congestion for more than a week and started getting a pretty bad cough at night for several days. Since I have family coming into town tomorrow I went to the doctor yesterday. He gave me steroids and cough syrup with codine. I am already doing so much better. I was pretty sure it wasn't a sinus infection, but I feel like I should be able to keep up with company and my 2 1/2 year old daughter for the next week without a problem. Ottakee
An industrial strength cough syrup is what I got when I went in. The doctor gave me a script for antibiotics but said to wait and see before filling it. The cough syrup reall helped as I could SLEEP. Jean in Newcastle
Curcumin (the active ingredient in tumeric) is a natural anti-inflammatory. I took it along with stuff for my cough when I had bronchitis and it helped to loosen all the inflammation in my chest.
Jean in Newcastle
N - acetyl - Cysteine (NAC) is a very good supplement for bronchitis also.
