Spetzi
I hate to post about things I haven't used, but I am probably going to get this after hearing great reviews. How to Become a Superstar Student, 2nd edition from The Great Courses. http://www.thegreatc...l.aspx?cid=1050 It's on sale until the end of the month for $29.95 according to the catalog I got today, but that price isn't coming up on the website. Hmmmm...well, I'm pretty sure you could get the discounted price, but you may have to call them. 1-800-832-2412. ETA: Found the link w/a discount. Good news! It's only $19.95 for direct digital download. http://www.shopgreatcourses.com/tgc/courses/course_detail.aspx?cid=1050
Halcyon
I am seeing this come up as 199? It's one I am interested in for sure, so if I am mistaken about the price, please let me know.
Alte Veste Academy
Learning to Learn, by Gloria Frender I like this one and also That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week. This thread is awesome: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/152424-teaching-academic-and-organizational-skills-to-your-logic-stage-student/

Spetzi
I don't know why it keeps redirecting to the expensive course. Grrr.... In the catalog it's $30 for the DVD and on some webpage somewhere on the internet the digital download is listed at $19.95. You may have to phone them to check on the price. My library has a couple of hundred of these courses so you might find it at your local library, too. I hope it works!
3andme
Galore Park's Study Skills book has been recommended for this age group and purpose previously. I haven't used it myself but Laura Corin, our resident Galore Park expert, might be able to shed some light on it if you pm her. This thread mentions the Study Skills book and has some other good discussion of effective study techniques.
Kareni
I found The Organized Student: Teaching Children the Skills for Success in School and Beyond by Donna Goldberg to be a worthwhile read. Regards, Kareni
mazakaal
I did some research on this when ds was in 8th grade, and the following books/dvds were recommended: How to Become a Superstar Student dvds from the Teaching Company What Smart Students Know How to Study in College Learning to Learn by Gloria Frender Study Skills by Galore Park I ended up going with How to Become a Superstar Student and Learning to Learn. What Smart Students Know got great reviews, but was said to be difficult and maybe better for a high school student. How to Study in College also got great review, but seemed like it might be better for later in high school. Galore Park looked good too, but I felt like I had enough with the dvds and the Learning to Learn book. They were geared to students who are in school, but there were really good principles in there, and I think they did teach ds some good study skills. Now getting him to put them into practice is a whole nuther story. :glare:
Bang!Zoom!
How to become a master student by David Ellis We had it for a couple years. Red cover, intended for remediation first year college. Several places were dated in it but there were excellent ideas. Very inexpensive in the back editions, only three dollars or so, it's very textbooky. Lots of Joe Obvious pointers in it, and that is valuable simply because of it's thoroughness. Verbally not challenging, but higher than a magazine for example. It's very practical and not theoretical or motivational. Just very instructional.
