Memphis/Graceland in July? Any tips?

My youngest sister has always adored Elvis, so we're going on a sisters only trip for her birthday in July. We'll probably be there for a long weekend, like Thursday-Sunday. Obviously we'll be going to Graceland but I was wondering if there were any hidden gems some of you might know of, anything from museums to restaurants.

We used to live outside Memphis. It will be hot. Very hot. Very humid. The tour of Graceland will not take you very long (~2 hours). We really enjoyed Sun Studios. The tour there is only about 30 min but it really gives you an in depth view of the music scene in Memphis and Elvis' start. Also, there is a bar on Beale St called the Blues City Cafe that has a Johnny Cash coverband called Gary Hardy and the Memphis 2 (I'm pretty sure they are still playing together). They usually are there every Fri and Sat night.

Just a FYI, there are some really bad parts of Memphis, so you might not want to stray too far away from the tourist areas.

All I know is: Don't breastfeed on the property.

In 2.5 years of nursing my little one, Graceland was the only unfriendly experience I had. :tongue_smilie:

Sorry. I still warn everyone, even though it has been nine years.

The food was wonderful. Look for little hole in the wall type places.

The zoo and botanical gardens are amazing.

July. I wonder if the daylilies would be blooming at the botanical gardens? They were amazing when we were there.

It would be hot and humid that time of year, but - from the looks of their website - they have a number of shade gardens. I don't remember the shade areas, only the daylilies.

Oh, Memphis. My husband and I met and got married while we lived in Memphis. I worked downtown near Beale, in the mall that has since closed. There are some very, very rough areas in Memphis. It's also a lot of fun. I used to hang out at Blues City, BB Kings, Club 152, the Black Diamond, the Tap Room, Wet Willies, People's, the New Daisy, Rum Boogie, Silky O'Sullivan's, and King's Palace on the street. I don't know if they're all still there. I also liked Big Foot which might be the Kooky Canuck now, Automatic Slims, Rodney's, the Flying Fish, and some other places downtown that have since closed. The whole time we lived there, we never went to Graceland. The zoo is nice though.
