SJ. Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 I will be the first to admit that when speaking of grammar I am no expert. I am curious if you think this is a properly written sentence: This week is special with it being January 7, 2013. It seems off to me. I think it is because I do not like the phrase "with it being" but perhaps that is just a matter of taste. Thoughts? Quote
thescrappyhomeschooler Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 It sounds off because you're equating a week with one date. It doesn't make sense. It would be better to say something like: This week has a special day on January 7, 2013. Or something to that effect. Quote

No it doesn't. It is awkward but not agrammatical. Interesting. After reading thescrappyhomeschooler's reply I thought there would be some type of problem, maybe with tenses. Like I said, I am far from being a grammar expert. Quote
Dana Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 I'd say there's a pronoun antecedent missing. What is "it" referring to? Quote
Word Nerd Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 No, it is not grammatically correct. The "it" should be "its" (see here or here for an explanation of why) but even if that were changed, I would rewrite the whole thing because it doesn't make sense. Quote
regentrude Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 The sentence is grammatically correct, but semantically incorrect. It (i.e. the week) can not be Jan 7 (i.,e. one day). Quote
Dandelion Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 I would say "This week is special as it is the week of January 7, 2013". Quote
