Guest
What is everyone's opinion of Rod & Staff spelling? My dd(9) just finished up All About Spelling 2, so I was planning on ordering either AAS3, or R&S spelling 3. She has tried Spelling Workout, and Soaring with Spelling and Vocab in the past, and they didn't work very well for her. She would miss several words on the test each week. All About Spelling has worked pretty well for her. She breezes through the lessons, remembers the rules, and can always spell them on paper really good. I am not sure if I should fix something that isn't broken, however I would love the extra time I would have if we switched to R&S. I am already ordering R&S for English, so I was thinking about their spelling too. I also breifly considered Apples and Pears, but it's lack of rules kind of scare me, although I am sure it work well for many. I just don't want to loose time and be playing catch up to get her caught back up in spelling. I would love to hear anyone's thoughs on this. boscopup
I've only seen samples of Spelling Workout and Soaring with Spelling, but it seems like both didn't really focus on the rules as much? R&S Spelling really focuses on the phonograms and rules that help you spell. It's not exactly the same as AAS, but I have found it pretty close. We just finished level 3 (after doing AAS 1-half of 3), and started level 4 today. It's gone VERY well here. AAS worked for my son, but it was awfully slow for him, and I was getting burned out on teaching it. I like that R&S is much more independent. In level 3, he was able to do Part A Monday, Parts B & C Tuesday, study words on his own Wed/Thurs, then test on Friday. Now in level 4, Part C is on its own day because there is more to it. R&S will point out the phonograms used in each word, discuss syllabication, when to use c vs. k, etc., etc. It's also very cheap. I'd suggest ordering level 3 with your English order, and if you don't like it, sell it and get the next level of AAS.
Ellie
Spelling by Sound and Structure is my favorite spelling after Spalding. The second and third grade books are very simple; you might consider starting with the fourth grade book.

My dd is 9, and has done Growing with Grammar 2, and we are over half way done with Easy Grammar 3 right now.
boscopup
You can start at grade level in English. It reviews everything from the previous level.

If her reading level is on par with her age, then yes, you could start with the fourth grade English. :-)
Zoo Keeper
Here's a thread about R&S Spelling. I've used it now for two years with my crew, and have no plans to change.
