naturally
Forgive me if this is a simple answer but... Will using Rod and Staff English and their spelling give me a complete lang arts curric with adding in books for reading? Or am I missing something important? Heidi
Yes, but you will want to supplement writing by middle school, imo.
naturally
Thanks. Now to find some writing to look into. :001_smile:
SilverMoon
SWB suggests "writing across the curriculum" with the writing lessons in R&S English are plenty. That's explained more in depth in the grammar and logic stage sections of TWTM.
Ellie
SWB says that you *don't* need to add any writing to R&S. We will assume that children will be writing for other subjects, as well, so it really isn't necessary to add that caveat to using R&S. Also, the writing picks up dramatically in the seventh grade text; like all of its other materials, R&S spends a great deal of time teaching the basics (grammar, punctuation, writing sentences that make sense, putting sentences into paragraphs that make sense, taking notes, outlining, etc.), so that when the dc are older, they are ready for more complex writing instruction and assignments. I always read that it needed to be supplemented in middle school here on the forums. That is GREAT news! :hurray: I LOVE R&S English! 2_girls_mommy
What grades are you talking about? I think in the 1st and 2nd grade you need the phonics for it to be complete. But after that, yes, R&S has been all we have ever used or needed. I use the English and the Spelling and continue writing the WTM way across the curric which looks different for my grammar stage child than it does for my logic stage child. I haven't ever felt we needed anything else for writing instruction besides a copy of WTM and R&S.
naturally
I don't have my own copy of WTM and have to wait my turn at the library. Could someone give me a quick explanation of "writing across the curric"? Thanks.

It just means having your dc write for history, science, etc.
Heidi
I don't have my own copy of WTM and have to wait my turn at the library. Could someone give me a quick explanation of "writing across the curric"? Thanks. It means picking a topic from what you are currently learning in history or science and have the child write a paper on it, or substitute those topics for the R&S writing assignments. Basically, there needs to be more writing during the week than just what is assigned in R&S, but instead of getting a whole additional writing curriculum, increase the number of assignments to incorporate other topics you are learning about. So if you are learning how to outline in Engish, assign a science topic to outline as well, later that week. I know in the lit program I plan to use next year it has the student writing on topics pulled from the readings once a week, so there is some more writing. I know I can pull some assignments from our classical studies and get additional writing practice there as well. That is what applying it across the curriculum means.
