FairProspects
The supplies that get used the most here are: Prismacolor Colored Pencils (expensive, but with a 40-50% coupon from Michaels they are better) 2nd-3rd grade lined paper (teacher store or order online) 1st grade lined paper Cardstock in white & different colors (Michaels or Joanns) Printer paper (anywhere) Scissors (assuming you have these) Clipboards (can be bought anywhere) Three hole punch (anywhere) Notebooks/binders (we file and notebook, but you may not depending on your style) Some way to store your HS materials - shelves, workboxes, plastic carts, etc. The math manipulatives get used a lot here too, but those are dependent on the math program you pick.. Farrar
You probably already have most of what you really, really need - paper, scissors, pencils, a few art supplies (some crayons and colored pencils and a couple of glue sticks seem like a good starting place), and a pencil sharpener. After that, it depends on how you want to organize things as to what you really need - wide lined composition books are a must for us, for example, and we don't use looseleaf paper or binders really - but other people are the opposite. School supplies are kind of fun... but you really don't need much. Once you get going, you can decide if you need to add to what you have (a better sharpener, new erasers, different types of notebooks, etc.) and whether you want to beef up your art supplies with better ones. sewingmama
Honestly - as someone who loves to buy new school supplies you need surprisingly little. My kids have a binder each to keep worksheets like MM. A lot of their work is done in workbooks so don't need paper for those. We use Hwot so I bought a bunch of their lined paper but we didn't use a lot of it as the kids prefer to write on blank paper. Things we used a lot of Pencils/beginner writer pencils (my DD is a chewer) Erasers Sharpener TONS of blank paper for writing, drawing, crafting, printing Crayons Markers Coloured pencils Glue sticks Scissors Clear plastic sleeves And that was about it

KristenR
I agree. Chances are you have everything you need. Not to add anything else to you 'plate' but if you are planning on buying some new things anyway, here is a fun idea I did for my three little ones. SilverMoon
Your oldest is second grade? My second grader regularly uses pencils, sharpener, erasers, a ruler, tablet paper, crayons, scissors and glue.
Alessandra
If I'm rushed, I order online from Staples -- in my area, at least, they have next day delivery at no extra cost, and shipping is free fro orders over $50. If I don't need $50 worth of supplies, I fill in with printer ink. I've also ordered successfully from Walmart -- their ink is cheaper than at Staples, at least for my printer. A great place to get supplies in bulk (or smaller quantities) is Classroom Direct. I order various glues by the box and save a bundle. Good quality pencils are also available by the gross. They also have their own brand of some things like post-its. Dollar stores are great for deals. Post-its, markers, pencils -- so cheap. Costco has nice binders -- a pack of 8 (I think) is less that $10 -- and they are nice quality, the kind that has a pocket in the front for slipping in a cover page. My only advice would be to look through your curriculum and see if you need anything out of the ordinary -- colored file folders, colored card stock, etc. I second the idea of getting a large capacity 3-hole pincher if you can afford it -- they cost about $30, I think. A really good electric pencil sharpener is lovely to have -- we have a Bostitch QuietSharp -- about $36, but available at about half that if you watch for deals (I got my because someone posted on WTM about a half price sale). I also agree with pp that you probably have everything that is strictly necessary, but I also know how nice it is to start with some new supplies. Oh, don't forget to get each child an individual zipper pencil case, if you want each dc to have something that is theirs alone.
Hwin
Check the dollar store first! That is where I get the lined paper (if you still use that), scissors, index cards, containers, etc.
airforcefamily
We could definitely get by with a pack of pencils, pencil sharpener, a couple erasers, crayons and/or colored pencils, a few binders, some looseleaf paper, and some printer paper until the sales start up again. If we were starting now I would look around for what we already have then just get a few basics from target to hold us over until the summer. Maybe costco for binders (they have nice ones that are inexpensive), printer paper, and possibly pencils. Last summer I bought a bunch of supplies thinking we would need them all. They were taking up so much space that we donated a box full last month. I've found that the more supplies we have the more careless we are with them. Why not lose, break, or chew on your pencil when there are 80 more in the closet? Why put the crayons away when another box can be grabbed? Why not throw away a sheet of paper with a single mark on it when there are 1000 sheets waiting to be written on? Why not use tons of glue when there is a gallon just sitting there? Just my experience.
Dmmetler
If you have Bargain Hunt stores, I've gotten a lot of the more "specialized" school supplies there dirt cheap-Prismacolor pencils, Prang crayons, oil pastels, soft chalk pastels, card stock, colored paper, a comb binder, really, really nice thick plastic page covers (the ones I got were designed for auto repair tickets, and work GREAT with vis-a-vis markers), and other cool stuff. I've gotten three partial sets of Prismacolor pencils, and in all cases, I assume that they priced them based on regular Crayola colored pencils, because they were maybe $5 a box or less. I think each was missing a couple of colors, but the sum total is great! I do buy DD's particular favorite pencils on Amazon when I have a big enough order to get free shipping, and I buy plain computer paper from Costco online (I get free shipping there) and anything specialized that I need-label stock, laminating pouches, combs for the comb binder, and printer ink/toner. For basic stuff, seriously, ask around and see if you know anyone who has any to pass on to get through the next few months. I have a backlog here I'd happily give away-I usually end up buying basics at 90% off at Target a few weeks after labor day, and then passing them off to teacher friends or to school supply drives the following year where I have extras (I've gotten 10 packs of 2 pocket folders with prongs for $.10 before). Even Back to school sale prices don't beat "Back to school is over and we still have a ton of this stuff that we need to get rid of" prices. Hfamous
Buying an electric pencil sharpener was one of the best purchases I ever made.
