Ottakee
I would like to loose 20 pounds over the course of the next year. I could stand to loose quite a bit more but honestly, a small reasonable goal is going to be much better than some lofty goal for the year. I plan to start weight watchers next week. I have some of the old stuff and will just use that as a guideline. No money to join a program right now. What I was thinking about though was trying to make some small lifestyle/eating changes that over time will be managable but help keep me on the right track. Things like: only eat when sitting down (later up to only at the table) only eating food off a plate (no snitching, eating out of the bag/box, etc) drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day (working up to that much water) cutting back on pop (I went pop free for 8 weeks before with NO weight loss at all) etc.
Brilliant
Whenever I have lost weight, it has been due to small reasonable changes such as you mentioned. For example, no alcohol, no mocha coffees, and portion control. I've never been able to stick to fad diets (eating only certain foods, etc.) but have had good success with those lifestyle/eating changes for up to a few months at a time. Then I fall back into the old wine & mocha ways eventually....! But at least I'm down 15 pounds by then. :)
DragonFaerie
A few years ago, I lost 65 pounds by counting calories. I have an enormous sweet tooth and if somebody told me I couldn't have this or that food or dessert, I would want nothing else but that "forbidden food." I also hate to exercise. By counting calories, I can eat anything I want so long as I stick to my calorie goal, and I still lose weight. It also helps me manage my food for the day. For example, I'm prone to nighttime snacking. So, I make sure to "save" some calories so I can have a snack before bed.

Maybe I will adopt them too. i have about 15 lbs to shed this year.
Night Elf
I cut some of my favorite foods/drinks in half. The thought of going cold turkey was unappealing. An example is chocolate milk. It's a huge weakness for me. I was drinking up to 3 cups a day. Instead of fixing an 8 oz. cup, I stuck to a 4 oz. serving instead. It was enough to satisfy my craving. After a few weeks, I cut out the multiple servings and let it become my 'before bed' snack. I also did the same thing with my soda and granola bars. And I managed to reach my goal weight with WW. Ottakee
Glad this has worked for others. I will be doing WW and I do already exercise 4-6 days a week plus do 1+ hours of horse/barn chores a day, every day. Amazing how many little "bites" I would take while cooking, clearing the table, putting groceries away, etc.
