sheryl Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 I recently learned about soapstone when I sister used her soapstone baking pizza stone to make homemade pizza, which btw was the best! After researching buying my own baking soapstone I learned that it can be installed as our kitchen counter. It's a natural, quarried stone! If you have soapstone for your kitchen counter, do you dis/like it and why? We were set on granite, but this soapstone idea seems appealing to me. Quote
Plink Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Isn't soapstone soft enough to dent with a butter knife? It sounds like a lot of maintenance. Quote
RoughCollie Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Go here: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/kitchbath/ Scroll to the bottom and search the kitchen forum for soapstone. Tons of info on it from people who have it. It's my favorite counter material, and some day, I'll have it. Quote

Ellie Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 I would *love* to have soapstone in my kitchen. However, here in Central Texas, it's hard to find. Boohoo. Quote
sheryl Posted December 31, 2012 Author Posted December 31, 2012 Thanks RC and E, Will definately consider this then!!! YEA! Quote
whitestavern Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 We looked into soapstone (loooove the look) and were told it is indeed soft. What we ended up doing was getting our granite honed (they buff the shine out) so our granite countertops look just like soapstone but are actually durable granite. Just another option for you :) Quote
astrid Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 We researched soapstone when we gutted and remodeled our kitchen because it's a natural look for our old Victorian home, which we are remodeling but keeping true to the period as much as possible. We decided to go with quartz, and I love it. I do love the look of soapstone, though! astrid Quote
UrbanSue Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Soapstone is our plan because it is easier to DIY than granite and can be sanded down, if necessary. There are a couple of big soapstone importers here, though, so it is easy to find remnants and have them delivered. I would guess it'd be a lot more expensive otherwise. Quote
Guest creese15 Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I also love soapstone. It is very easy to maintain. Applying mineral oil or wax to it will help the stone darken evenly. Though it is heat and stained resistant, still it can easily get scratched. Anyway, soapstone can be repaired easily if scratched. But if you want a more durable counter, I suggest you go for Granite. Visit this to get more ideas options : http://www.myinstalledcountertops.com Quote
