Mixing levels in MCT LA?

It's certainly doable to mix levels. I didn't use anything in the Island level except Sentence Island, so I can't speak to those books with experience, but I know at the time I was trying to decide, many advised that Building English wasn't necessary, it was fine to start with Caesar's English 1 with an older child. Apparently there wasn't anything in Building English that they wouldn't get from CE. I think most feel that the poetry are more advanced than the rest of the books, so starting at a lower level there would probably be fine.

I am a big advocate of using the books how they work for you - I think we've all noticed a big range in difficulty within a level, and that there are definite "jumps" in difficulty between the levels.

I would say that Building English might be too young for a 6th grader. CE1 is a great entry point into the vocabulary. In fact, you could easily do CE1 and 2 in one year--doing 5 stems and 5 words each week. Also, CE2 has review of CE1 built in, so you could just get CE2 and have your child do the review alongside the main CE2 lesson. One reason for keeping the vocabulary aligned with the grammar is that he uses the vocabulary in the practice book and it is fun (and valuable) to encounter the words there.
