Soror
http://whole9life.com/start/  The basics are: No grains, sugar (natural (honey - maple syrup- rice syrup- agave- stevia- etc or otherwise), alcohol, dairy or legumes.  Allowed: Meats - especially grassfed Veggies- all but white potatoes pretty much Eggs Fruit Oils- focus on things like olive, coconut, avocado nuts and seeds (except peanut butter)  - 3 meals, no snacks - Focus on enjoying food in their natural state and not trying to recreate "normal" foods- ie making pancakes or breads from almond or coconut flour and such   There are other details as well but those are the basics.  I ate way too much carbs in pregnancy and need a reset. I need to lose weight from pregnancy as well (about 20ish pds) but more importantly want to get back to eating without cravings and also back to sleeping better and having more energy. I've been mostly following this the last few weeks and am already feeling more like myself.  I'm planning a whole 45, from Jan 1 to Feb 14 and hope in that time to lose about 10lbs. Another part of the program though is to not weighing -eeek- but to focus on the other benefits and not just the weight and measurements. AlmiraGulch
Just bought the book. I've been considering going paleo for a while and decided it would be a good New Year's resolution. Giving up dairy is going to be really hard for me, but I figure if I don't feel significantly better after 30 days I can always bring it back in. It can't hurt to try. teachermom2834
I'm starting Jan 2nd. I have a big family gathering on the 1st. I have already gone low carb so that part should be a little easier. Giving up cheese is going to be hard. It's been a staple of my low carb dieting. I have to admit I'll miss my wine, too. I feel it is necessary to do this, though. I have let my eating habits really slip. I am one of those people that can get in the habit of fake food/ unhealthy food in the name of a diet. Â I'm looking forward to it. I hope I can do it.
Maela
Can I join if I modify my rules a bit? I'm just not sure if I can go without the teaspoon of real cream that I put in my morning coffee and the occasional glass of red wine with dinner. Â I eat mostly primal anyway, but I've never completely given up legumes or dairy. And I've broken the no sugar rule in December more times than I can count. I haven't been sleeping well lately, and I've been feeling that afternoon sluggishness that I used to get almost two years ago before I stopped eating grains. So I'm eager to get back to healthy eating again. Â I was planning on starting January 2nd also.

Ann.without.an.e
Whole30 is great! I highly recommend everyone to give it a try for at least 30 days (preferably 60 though). I did and 9 months later I am still 98% following the diet. I am on half of my thyroid meds and I have had "0" joint pain since about week 2 or 3 (my joint pain began when I was 24 and was pretty much constant until I began Whole 30). I will be 35 in January and I feel the better than I did 10 years ago. Â The key to this diet is good fat. If you eat enough good fat then you will not be hungry in between meals. This is not a low fat diet. The goal is to force your body to switch from carb burning to fat burning. It is called becoming "fat adapted". It is a glorious thing ;) My mom started after my success and she dropped her cholesterol almost 100 points in 60 days and dropped over 20 pounds in 30 days. Keep in mind, she was eating more fat and eggs than ever! She had tried a low-fat diet for 6 months and couldn't get her cholesterol to budge much. Â I haven't gone back to a standard diet. I still eat 100% gluten free. I will very occassionally eat non-gluten grains or sugar. For example, I made an incredible gluten free chocolate cake for Christmas and I had a slice :) but I hadn't eaten grains or sugar for weeks before that and I went right back to the diet after. Ann.without.an.e
I mentioned in another thread that I'm planning an eating overhaul around here, but Whole30 seems a little too much for me. Â I think the no legumes thing put me over the edge. What's wrong with beans? Â Â The goal is to get all of the inflammatory foods out of the diet. Beans can be inflammatory for some. The goal is to take all of that out for 30~60 days and then reintroduce foods to see which ones might cause a problem for you personally. If you read the book, it just makes so much sense. Â It is an extreme diet, especially if you eat a standard diet. I was already gluten and dairy free when I first tried it and it was still a challenge. It has made such a huge difference in how I feel that I haven't looked back and it doesn't feel hard anymore. Â I did add in potatoes after 60 days and they don't seem to be a problem whatsoever for me. Potatoes are not inflammatory, they are simply higher in carbs than other veggies, so if you have a tendency to hold weight you should not eat too many potatoes. Soror
Hi all! Â re: allowing other foods, you can do it any way you want but it won't be the Whole 30, which is fine, but just not what this is. Â As Charleigh said it is about eliminating foods that can cause issues with some people. I've been gluten free for 4.5 yrs here and was entirely dairy free for 3 ish years. I never thought dairy was an issue for me but rather I eliminated because my son showed that he was intolerant and I was hoping that perhaps it would help my pregnancy go well and my baby to be more mellow(as my previous baby had issues when I had dairy). Short story long when I added it back I realized that it doesn't do me any favors. I get mucosy and my ears start to hurt. It also seems to lead to weight gain and cravings for me. I only even added in things like butter, yogurt and hard cheeses which are supposed to be easier to digest. Â I've been grain free for long periods as well, for a good part of the last 7 yrs. I have however slipped when I added back dairy a year or so ago. I started eating more sugar and then eating grains here and there. Making more baked goods w/ almond and coconut flour. I want to be moderate but it seems my body does best when I am the most strict. So, I am hoping to reset those taste buds and my habits. Giving up dark chocolate even- !!!!
Ann.without.an.e
Wow, we are a lot alike, Soror! I only went dairy free because I was nursing my first child and she was intolerant to it. I never imagined I would feel so much better that I would remain pretty much dairy free. She is 14 now :) I have had periods of time in the past 14 years when I would start slipping in dairy and with that came cravings, weight gain, bloating, and just general irritability. I do not eat any dairy ~ not even cheese or butter. I also do best and feel best when I am most strict. I think it is easier to just say no than to say, "maybe a little". I guess it is black and white for me like that. Now dark chocolate is my little splurge every now and then ~ gluten free and dairy free, of course. It is what makes me say I am 98% still following the diet. I occasionally sneak a few dark chocolate chips. Keeps me sane! I didn't when I was in the first 60 days though.
mommymilkies
I also found out I was dairy intolerant while nursing an allergic and intolerant baby (well, a few of them!). I really want to start, but I don't have money to grocery shop until the 4th. :)
Soror
Very interesting! I never thought I had a dairy issue either. I thought maybe a lactose issue, which is why I've tried to stick to low to no lactose items but it just doesn't work for me. It is nice to hear it effects others the same way as it makes me feel a little crazy about it all. Interesting to me I was reading the blog for "The Happiness Project" and she was talking about how there are 2 different type of people, some are abstainers and some are moderators. It was a real aha moment for me as for years I've tried to make myself a moderator. People make you feel bad being strict, especially with diet. However, reading that I realized that it is ok that is how I work best. I also get tired of being different, really tired. Especially being already gluten free there are enough foods I cannot eat and I get tired of our family always standing out due to food. But it is not worth it, not when I feel so much better the stricter I am. Â I can let up on some things a bit, like potatoes work ok for me at times, when not trying to lose weight. I also feel ok allowing little bits of dark (dairy/soy free) chocolate, it doesn't lead to me overeating or such. I need to try for awhile without them though to get my body back to really enjoying all the other wonderful and healthy veggies. I like that the plan calls for no snacking as I've gotten into the habit of snacking just because, and not due to hungriness. Â Oh, and I didn't mean to sound like the diet police earlier. I was in a hurry. The Whole 30 does call for complete compliance or starting over. I'm sure others do it in different ways but I plan to be strict. Â I'm starting on the 1st but anyone else can join in at any time! I'll be making a menu today and will post it (hopefully). Anyone with favorite sites, please share, I'm in the mood for trying some different things.

Soror
I don't have anything easy or exciting. All varieties of eggs(fried, boiled, omelettes, scrambled- right now it is omelette style w/ guacamole and salsa)- sometimes I find when I'm tired I switch up the kind or then fast in the am here and there to break it up. Also, meat and veggies, soup or leftovers. Fruit, especially berries w/ coconut milk. Sweet potato hash w/ homemade (or safe) sausage. Breakfast in particular is interesting to me. I need something relatively quick, like eggs, but I get SO sick of eggs after a few days. Â Thoughts? Â Â Eggs are a staple. I think a huge key is making homemade Olive Oil Mayo. You can then use this and flavor it all sorts of ways for sauces. My favorite omelet is stuffed with sauteed peppers, onions, and mushrooms and then topped with a creamy sauce made from the mayo jazzed up with a squeeze of lime or lemon and seasoned with cumin, garlic, and cliantro. Super yummy. Also, sometimes just a lettuce wrap for breakfast works. Many Larabars are safe too, to keep on hand for emergency just in case nothing else is available. AlmiraGulch
Thanks! I really get sick of eggs very quickly. They actually give me headaches and stomach aches if I eat too many. I don't have to cut them out entirely but I do need to find alternatives. Â I just finished reading the book (I'm a fast reader, plus I skip the stuff I don't want to read) and I like that they have some staples to start with (including the olive oil mayo recipe). I can definitely see how I can do this relatively easily. I'm excited to start! Â Now if only I can get my husband to join me. He needs it at least as much as I do.... teachermom2834
I'm prepping up some food ahead of time today. I made Whole30 compliant chili and put it in the freezer in individual servings. I also made up some meatballs to have handy too. I'm making some egg and sausage muffins to stick in the freezer for breakfast. I know I'll have trouble if I don't have some things I can grab quick. I also like eggs but don't always feel like cooking/ dirtying a pan first thing in the morning. These I can grab and warm up easily. I made some homemade italian dressing earlier and might even try my hand at the mayo tonight. Â I tried a lara bar today to see if I would like it. I did like the one I tried (cherry pie?). I know that has to be an emergency meal though. I totally can rely too much on those sorts of packaged foods and I know that is too much sugar for me in one shot. I will save those for when the alternative would be a total slip up. I really want to do this. I need to prove to myself I can do this for 30 days. Occasionally I need to have a reminder that I am smarter than food and that I am strong enough to make good choices.
Soror
That is great teachermom to have things prepared. I don't have anything premade here but have been in the cooking mode, thankfully. I never did get an official menu made up but did get some restocking done at the grocery store.
Hunter's Moon
I am considering starting this. It may have to wait until February though. I have GERD, and certain kinds of grains and dairy bother it. I'm sure all kinds bother me and cutting them out would help immensely. Â DH and I live with my parents, so it might be hard to go completely dairy free at least. We always have a veggie and meat for dinner, but sometimes butter is added. Â I'm also allergic to nuts, but that shouldn't be too difficult to figure out.
AlmiraGulch
I intended to start this today, and even have hubby on board (or so he says), but in the interest of sticking to my budget it may have to wait until Friday when I go to the grocery store again. I hate it when I get all excited to do something and then it has to wait, but I only have plan-compliant food for a day or so. Normally I would just go buy the stuff anyway, but I'm really trying to stop doing that. Â I'm not throwing in the towel, though. I've been exhausted lately, with frequent headaches and just feeling overall like crap. Plus, I really do need to drop abut 30 - 40 pounds. I'm actually excited about starting this because I'm convinced I'll just feel better, and have more energy. I need that. Like Teachermom said, I'm smarter than food, and I'm strong enough to make good choices.
forevergrace
Check out the Clean Program by Dr. Junger. Their web site has fantastic meal plans, recipes, support, and much more. I did followed his thirty day plan, and continued on for another month. I really felt amazing and lost bloat due to gluten and dairy, however, that was two years ago and I've slipped back into some old food habits. Holidays are hard, because of baking!!!! I still manage to watch my sugar, and stick w/stevia. Good Luck!!!! Â Dr. Junger also has the Elimination Plan, easier than flying into the the thirty-day cleanse for some. Veritaserum
I did a Whole30 in October. It was fabulous! I realized that wheat and gluten are major problems. Even dairy causes issues for me when I consume it every day (various forms). I lost my taste for cheese and peanut butter. I lost 7% of my body weight in that month and felt better than I had in years. I felt pre-thyroid troubles good most days after day 8 or so. Â I ate some junk over the holidays and may start another Whole30 in the next few days to clean up my body. My only reason not to do another Whole30 is that I am interested in developing a more permanent solution for how to feed myself and my family going forward. Â Thai brand coconut milk separates in the fridge so you can scoop off the "cream" to add to your coffee.
LizzyBee
I am starting a whole 30 on Jan 3. I subscribed to the email support this time, hoping that will help me stick with it. I tried a Whole 30 in November and was amazed by how much my brain fog lifted in less than a week. But with all the holiday treats floating around, I didn't stick with it. Â I work a lot of hours during tax season, so in one way, doing Whole 30 will be hard because of time limitations, but OTOH, I really need it to keep my energy level up and brain fog down. I also need to get my cholesterol down; it was 272 in October, and the longer it stays that high, the more my dr will bug me about getting on a statin. Â I sometimes cook up a bunch of meat and freeze individual portions. One of my kids is in ps, so she and I both use the frozen food for lunches when we don't have leftovers to take. I also make granola bars to freeze in individual portions for her and she loves them because they are more filling than commercial bars. A friend sent me a recipe for paleo granola bars, so I will make a batch of those today or tomorrow. Â I have used Atkins protein bars during tax season before, and they are filling and don't cause cravings, but I suspect they're not paleo compliant. If you know of good paleo bars that I can use when I don't have time to make my own, let me know. I usually get salad stuff and prepare it myself, but during tax season, I'll buy the bags of greens already cut up and also other veggies that are already cut up. The bad thing is that the pre cut veggies tend to not last very long and they're more expensive, but I am trying to be realistic about what I have to do to maintain healthy eating habits when I'm working 50-55 hrs/week. Â If you have other suggestions for maintaining Whole 30 on the run, please let me know! Â Here's a recipe I made last week, and they were the best meatballs I've ever made or eaten! http://paleomg.com/leftovers-curry-meatballs/
Veritaserum
I love, love, love PaleOMG. She's hilarious and her food is yummy. The double layer fudge is fantastic! Â I haven't found a paleo bar recipe. I use Larabars in a pinch. I need to find a set of recipes that I cook up and freeze...that my family will actually eat. Our two easy meals at the moment are egg and sausage frittata and ground beef cooked with vegetables (like a stir fry). I'd be fine eating the ground beef every day with different veggies and seasonings, but my family likes more variety.
Soror
Q and Lizzy I'm happy your joining as well! I started yesterday actually but today is my official day.  Lizzy those meatballs look delicious!!!! I'm putting that on the menu for next week for sure!!!!  I wish I had some quick fix ideas but right now I really don't.  Laura fwiw I find the mostly paleo lifestyle easy enough for the whole family. I know some are able to transition everyone but it is not worth it to me. The kids are gluten free as it is and that is enough at this point. I cook them rice at times and sometimes gluten free rice pasta. I sometimes do rice but very, very rarely do pasta (obviously not at all for the next 45 days or more). So, I like to cook a shared main dish and a few different sides.  Foods today: 3 egg omlette cooked in lard w/ guac and salsa, red grapefruit Pork roast- cooked w/ garlic, fresh cranberries and oranges, green beans w/ tomatoes, garlic and roasted onions, blueberries and strawberries(frozen) w/ coconut milk  I didn't make it without a snack yesterday but that's ok :) We will see how it goes. I did however abstain from chocolate and other sweetness for that snack. Tonight I'm still not sure what I'm making. I need to check to see if my spaghetti squash is still good. I have sweet potatoes cooking now and think there will be a big salad as well.

I think you will get a better idea of what you need to eat and then it will be easy peasy to stick to 3 meals a day. Hopefully not making all the big changes in one day will make the first days easier. I made compliant salad dressing yesterday but it was so yummy I ate it all up. Ann.without.an.e
I think it is great to keep some food cooked up ahead of time. Take a less busy day of the week and sautee some chicken, beef, etc I try to chop several bell peppers, onions, etc at once, sautee them and keep them in separate containers in the fridge. So I might have precooked containers of chicken, beef, pork, onions, bellpeppers, cauliflower mashed "potatoes", etc, etc all in the fridge and they just need to be reheated. Egg salad and chicken salad make great lunches. My favorite salad is a bed of lettuce with veggies, homemade chicken salad, pecans, diced apples, and balsamic vinegar. Fruit is good :) Also, almond butter is acceptable. An apple with fresh ground almond butter is very yummy.

I slowly lowered down after having the baby and I hope it makes this transition easier. The week before Christmas I was about 98% compliant and it went well. I know in the past sometimes I've been grumpy cutting back my carbs and I really want to avoid that. Share you salad dressing- I'm always looking for good recipes!  veritaserum- Thanks for the input!! I'd love to lose 10-15 lbs total but I don't think I will. I guess we will see how it goes. Yesterday I ended up not snacking at all and felt ok. I thought about it in the afternoon but I got busy and then realized I wasn't really hungry. I was pretty much really very low carb paleo after #3 and never had an issue with supply, however of course it is different every time. I tend more towards oversupply actually.  mom2bee- Sounds like a great start! I've started exercising a few times since she was born but I'm trying to make myself take it easy a bit. I'm going to try to remember to make a weekly thread so it would be great if you would join- now or then!  charleigh- great ideas on preparing food ahead of time. I do need to do that. Your chicken salad sounds super yummy! Dh bought me a new immersion blender for Christmas so I can finally make homemade mayo again, ya!!!!  I had a great supper- homemade spaghetti sauce w/ grassfed ground beef about 6-8oz, a med size sweet potato w/ a bit of coconut oil (maybe 2 tsp or so) and cinnamon and a GINORMOUS dinner plate size salad of greens, bell peppers, tomato, sunflower seeds (roasted but safe) and kalamata olives- topped with evoo and balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper. I had 2 plates of food and finished it all.  Today's plan: bfast- eggs w/ salsa and guac and grapefruit lunch- liver and onions and roasted broccoli- blueberries w/ coconut milk supper- roasted chicken, beets and sweet potato, and sauteed spinach  I might try looking for a different recipe for the chicken and root veggies, depends on how I'm feeling. Soror
bfast and lunch done- My liver was disgusting tbh, it is a bit freezer burnt. I ate it though. I know it is good for me and I hate to throw out good grassfed liver. Â I love kalamata olives as well- they are a definite splurge! Â Sounds like a good plan elisheba! I really like roasted brussel sprouts and ribs are sooooo yummy!
AlmiraGulch
I sort of started this today. I say "sort of" beause some horrible stomach ailment woke me up in the middle of the night and even the thought of food makes me shudder. I'm somewhat better but not well enough to eat a bunch of protein or fat. Trust me. I tried. Â So I haven't had any actual meals yet, but everything I did manage to get down so far has been clean and whole and follows the rules. I'm starting to wonder if I were to just eat something more substantial if I'd feel better, but I really don't want to cook. I have lean ground beef out and no idea what to do with it. Â This isn't working out at all like I'd planned.
Soror
Hey QValencia- sorry to hear you are sick, it seems that this has been a horrible year as far as illness, around here at least. What about just making plain burgers with your beef? Â I'm feeling a bit icky myself, I think dh gave me his blasted cold. The cold just won't go away!!!! Â For supper I made: Â Roasted Chicken w/ Carmelized Onions- in a sauce of balsamic vinegar, coconut aminos, coconut oil, garlic, sea salt and pepper. -Very simple but really, really good! Â Spicy Cauliflower- cauliflower fried/sauteed in coconut oil until golden brown topped w/ salt, pepper and hot pepper flakes - Very yummy a definite keeper. I loved the texture and the taste. Â Sauteed Spinach w/ Onions and Garlic- Sauteed in lard w/ onions and garlic- salt and pepper - I had WAY too much salt on this, it was hardly edible. I cut the recipe but didn't cut the salt enough. I choked it down but last night I was dreaming about drinking cups of water! Â I need to get a roast out for supper. I think we will have leftover chicken for lunch. I'm going to throw the chicken back on this am for a quick broth. Â I'm not weighing but I feel smaller today. I do plan on trying on my *mini goal* jeans once a week. I'm hoping to get down 2 sizes. I don't know if that will happen by Feb 14th but I'm hoping to at least be down 1 size by then.
Hunter's Moon
Breakfast & Lunch - sausage with scrambled eggs and mushrooms (I wasn't able to eat breakfast this morning, so I ate about 11 Â Dinner - I'm making egg-coated lemon chicken tonight for everyone. I'll probably roast some cauliflower and carrots.
Hunter's Moon
A bit of a brag - I was at Walmart and hadn't eaten breakfast and was soooo tempted to get Subway. I resisted the very strong urge and waited until I was home. That is a huge step for me! Â I do have a bit of a headache today, but I am noticeably less bloated. Dairy really bothered me, so I am sure that was that.
Soror
That is awesome to avoid cravings, it is especially hard when you are hungry! I had a bit of craving yesterday, just because chocolate chips sounded good! Reprt back on your recipe, it sounds good.
Hunter's Moon
The egg-crusted lemon chicken is a sort of spin-off of my father's lemon chicken. He uses flour for a crust, and it helps the egg stick, but I am going to use just egg. Â All I do is cut the breasts into strips and dip them in the egg. Then I put them in a pan and cook them on each side for about 4 minutes each. Then I put them in a baking dish and pour some lemon juice and the rest of the egg batter on them. Sometimes I add some other seasonings if I am feeling inspired. Then I just bake until done. My favorite part is the egg "crust". Mmmmmmm. It really makes a difference. stansclan89
Dh and I are going to start a Whole30 next week. We partially did this in November, but with the holidays totally went off of it. Dh has to travel for work starting the 21st (for a week I think), so will probably have a hard time then. He is going to a small town in southern California close to the Mexican border--not many choices for restaurants. I tend to go off diet when he leaves too. Maybe we could have an accountability thread to help us all get through?
AlmiraGulch
I ended up eating last night, even though I still didn't feel well, and felt much better afterward. I made a skillet dish with ground beef, sauteed onions and garlic, and pan fried sweet potatoes, seasoned with coconut milk, salt, pepper, and cayenne. It was absolutely delicious! Â This morning I had scrambled eggs, which I reallly don't like but I made them delicious by adding sauteed onions, spincah, and roast beef, and topping with fresh avocado and homemade horseradish sauce (made by mixing Olive Oil Mayo with some fresh horseradish). Â I haven't had lunch, which I know is bad, but I'm having a busy day working and just haven't had time to cook anything. I did have a handful of cashews. Â Dinner tonight will be Bora Bora Fireballs (ground pork, pineapple and coconut meatballs) and Creamy French Onion Cucumbers, both from the Well Fed cookbook. Â I do need to go find something to eat now, though. I'm really hungry. Maybe some homemade tuna salad on a bed of bib lettuce and tomato. Mmmmm.....going to the kitchen now....
