klmama Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 What can you recommend that is clean, well-written, and full of suspense? This dc has especially enjoyed the Rosemary Sutcliff books and the Redwall series. Quote
Kfamily Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Hmmm, here are some ideas that my older dd really enjoyed (and she really liked many of Sutcliff's books too) anything by Tolkien (LOTR series and more) Scarlet Pimpernel Arthurian Saga by Mary Stewart (4 books in this series) The Wizard of Earthsea (this is the first in a series) mythology (Dd recently read Great Myths of the World by Padraic Colum and really enjoyed it.) I have heard good things about Mary Ray, although we don't own any of her books. Treasure Island Quote
Lily_Grace Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Sherlock Holmes. The short stories are great and were thoroughly devoured here. Quote
VaKim Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Has he or she read the other series by Brian Jaques? My girls ( and I ) are enjoying these right now. Castaways of the Flying Dutchman The Angel’s Command Voyage of Slaves Quote
HollyDay Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 My oldest loves mysteries as well and finding some for her when she was younger was a challenge. She did not like the Sherlock Holmes series, but she loved the Scarlett Pimpernel. There are actually several books in that series if your dc is interested. BJUP has some mystery books in their Journey Forth publications. Many of them actually have pretty good story lines and you can count on BJU to be clean. Dd enjoyed some of the Miss Marple books. Kareni Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 My daughter was also a big fan of the Scarlet Pimpernel and its many sequels at that age. We borrowed at least six sequels via inter library loan. She also enjoyed Sherlock Holmes and stories by Edgar Allan Poe. Be aware that the latter might be frightening. She might also enjoy the Samurai Mysteries series which begins with The Ghost in the Tokaido Inn by Dorothy Hoobler as well as Detectives in Togas by Henry Winterfeld. There are three great posts by Eliana in this older thread with lots of titles that might interest you. Book recommendations needed: for 14 year old young lady Here's another excellent thread with meaty suggestions by Eliana. Eliana mentions some other good authors/titles in this recent thread and here. Can you tell I'm an Eliana fan?! Regards, Kareni Quote
