sbgrace
We are selling a house. We've never been given a firm closing date. The real estate agent told me she'd check on it last Friday but she must have forgotten as we didn't hear from her. I contacted her again today. She tells me it might be Monday (this Monday) and we'll know for sure tomorrow. It's possession at closing. We still have furniture and lots of stuff in that house! The paperwork said within 60 days of signing the papers (that would be mid-Jan) and the people were getting a USDA loan and that's typical for that type of loan. Now we have one week-end potentially to get things out? I don't know if we can do it especially this week-end given the holiday and we'll need a rental truck and help. I imagine we could say we can't do that date??? But maybe that's not smart given closed is done? I have never known someone not to have a closing date way in advance? WWYD? lmrich
You can ask if you can close on Monday as scheduled, but with a condition that you do not vacate until Wed. Or something.it does not hurt to ask.
bettyandbob
I'd make the request to extend the time, but I'd also work like the dickens to get out. I know so many people who have sales fall through, I wouldn't risk changing the closing date to miss the sale. But that's just me.
happi duck
I also wouldn't want to miss the sale. However, that is ridiculously short notice! When we bought our house, the previous owners rented from us for a week. It seemed really common. The amount per day was equal to our monthly payment divided by 31. It was all handled as part of the closing. The now 'renters' were responsible for leaving things the same as they were at closing. The garage door broke while they were renting and they were responsible for fixing it. If I were 'renting' I'd want it to be as short as possible to avoid anything breaking. MooCow
Our house sold very quickly in a slowed down market, and the buyers needed to close within two or three weeks to keep their mortgage rate; we were nowhere ready to vacate. Our realtor made a deal, and we rented the house from the new owner for a few weeks.
JFSinIL
Sell on the date they want but ask if you can pay them a week's rent so you have some time to move?
TranquilMind
You can ask if you can close on Monday as scheduled, but with a condition that you do not vacate until Wed. Or something.it does not hurt to ask. Right. It is unreasonable to provide you with no notice to vacate. Request whatever time you need to vacate the premises. Really stupid way for them to do business. You are permitted BY LAW a 24 hour period to review the closing documents, particularly the ones pertaining to cost, to compare them with your Good faith estimate. I'd be asking them NOW to email those over.
AngieW in Texas
We rented our last house to the sellers for 3 weeks because the house they were building wasn't quite ready yet.
KatieJ
Really? who is going to be open for that kind of business on New Year's Eve. I would highly doubt that it will actually happen. But you should be in contact with the agent who is setting up the closing and tell them you need time to clear out the house.

sbgrace
Were you able to close? Just curious! It's done and we're glad! It actually was scheduled for Monday. We got everything out over the week-end in a winter weather advisory with nearly 7 inches of snow here (ugh). Uhaul was extremely good in working with us in terms of the weather. They were willing to reschedule the truck with less than 24 hours notice and gave us an extra day free. Anyway, it would have happened Monday but the buyer messed up some stuff on his end in getting proof of funds and they rescheculed for Thursday. It feels good to be down to one house!
