blondeviolin
I'm not worried about reading level. She's really, REALLY into the Greek Myths right now (currently enjoying D'Aulaire's over and over again). Would the plot be over her head? I'm about ready to check it out from the library and give it a read-through...
mom31257
My dd read them in late middle school, and she said she wouldn't recommend it for a six year old. The promiscuity of the gods producing offspring with humans and that it happens a lot is made very clear in the books. It's not that the books are inappropriate really. If you don't mind her knowing people can have kids without being married, they may be fine. As far as the plot being over her head, she thinks if she is a child who gets into stories and really wants to know what happens to the characters, she may be able to stick with the plot through all 5 books. FriedClams
My kids were capable of reading it then, but the content is, in IMHO, not appropriate for that age. I let mine have the series at 10 and they devoured it then.
prairiegirl
I let my kids read them when they were 10 or 11. I don't think I would let younger read them because of the content.
Grover
Mr 6 just finished it before Christmas and loved it. The inappropriate stuff sailed right over his head.
Harriet Vane
No. Inappropriate. Wait till she's older.
jennynd
DS also read it when he was 6. If u are not sure, u can ask her to narrate to you on the content and discuss about the story
Mélie
My almost-6-year-old just finished the third book and hasn't had a problem with them. The plot definitely isn't over his head (he's talks about the books a lot and has acted them out for us with Lego men), but I know my more sensitive son wouldn't enjoy the violence. JeneralMom
My DH did them as read alouds when the kids were 7, 6, 4 and 2. They all loved the story but the 4 and 2 year old obviously didn't follow the plot 100% DS who just turned 8 a few weeks ago has read them all and every other book by the authour and started when he was 6. He does, however, read at an adult level and fully comprehends the plot. I always thought it was adorable when he would stop reading the book to go cross reference some point in the story with his other mythology books. I have no issue with the content of the books but we are liberal and secular so take that into consideration.
zoo_keeper
DD7 read the first book or two when she was 6, liked them alright, but just now received the set for Christmas and has really enjoyed them more this time around.
