Anyone making January lesson plans this week?

Recommended Posts

The toughest thing for me the last couple months, with homeschooling four kids, has been getting everyone's work scheduled. I think what I'm going to try to do over the next couple of days is assign all the kids' work through January.

Is anyone else working on lesson planning?

I am, DD and I have been playing around with 'school' but she's begging to start something more regular (this child thrives on schedules) and I got a laminator for Christmas so I'm working this week and next on getting some things ready to try with her, and getting some games and little fun pre-reading activities for DS who is very jealous of DDs worksheets, but not ready for that kind of thing yet. Planning on starting our new family schedule Jan 2nd.

I sat down tonight and penciled out my potential 2nd/4th grade plans for 2013/14, but that was more about procrastinating other things.

Theoretically before we resume next Tuesday, I'll iron out our history readings for the January unit, finish watching the IEW unit 3 segment I began months ago, decide where we're going next for BFSU science, and pick out book selections and copywork for the upcoming week or two.

Hmm, maybe I should get going with this...

I plan on starting back up as much as possible on Jan. 2. We will be waiting for some books to come in still, so we will have some holes in the schedule that first week, and co-op won't start back up until the next week, which will give us an extra day at home still.

I have spent ALL DAY today on my bed w/calendar, laptop, notebooks and pens and have gotten a ton done. Thankfully girls have lots of new Christmas stuff to keep them busy and are getting lots of WII play since it is too cold to go out again. I re wrote family/school schedules for this semester (a different one each day of the week, depending on the day's babysitting child and activities) I have planned preschool somewhat. I have details to fill in, but have a main idea. I have ordered books on Amazon. I have lessons to print off for reading, but I have the windows open ready to go. I have pulled science books off the shelf and know what we will be doing and what day we will be doing it and in what time slot. I just now have to figure out how much I can cover and pick and choose the best stuff from the books, etc.

I still have Latin planning to do, but I am taking a slight break. I have also made lists for what needs done around the house for dh and me. I have the list ready for returns and exchanges of Christmas gifts at Walmart. I have reserved library books, though I have more to do there, and some returns due.

I will by the end of the day: mop kitchen and bath, have a bag ready to go to library, print off next CHOLL lesson, the schedules I typed, take a shower, and vacuum the living room. Hopefully I can also print out my grocery list with coupons, but that may be a stretch.

It feels good to get so much planning done

Hi Phathui,

Yes, I still need to plan for January and for the whole year! Planning a schedule is mentioned in Susan Bauer's TWTM on page 637.

I like the idea of preparing the end result first and then planning 'backwards' as mentioned in TWTM and on Sonya Shafer's webpage on Planning your CM's Education. Simply Charlotte Mason (SCM) has an e-book on scheduling. In the sample pages, there are 5 simple steps to make a custom plan. The 'big picture' is an outline or an overview of your child's education. The rest of the book goes through, planning you term, your week, your day.

In her website, Sonya has added links to a free part of the series Planning Your Charlotte Mason Education which she says has a simple 5-step process to help you design a plan that works for your family:

"When you begin to plan for a year, look at your 12-year overview and see which subjects you have planned to teach your children. For example, if you will have a child in Grade 3, Grade 5, and Grade 8, look at the subjects you have decided to teach in those grades. I like to combine all my children together for as many subjects as possible. It saves me a lot of time, and the children gain the benefit of learning from each other." Sonya Shafer (SCM)

There is a printable schedule template, other examples of her weekly and daily schedules and also a CM Curriculum Guide.

Planning a little for Jan and beyond this week. I created folders at the beginning of the year for each month and I put all of my kids school work, drawings, projects, and anything else they do. Today, I noticed we didn't do as much in Dec as compared to other months but we had a couple of weeks of the flu and Christmas festivities took up time as well. I was pleasently surprised how much we had completed in Nov.

As far as Jan. My kids decided to take this week off from schooling and start back up Monday instead I am going to focus on getting everything in order at least for the 4 main subjects Math, L.Arts, Science, History.

I have Math pretty much planned out using Simply Charlotte Mason's business math series for Middle School for my older 2. It's easy and they have enjoyed setting up their businesses. My daughter has decided to open a pet shop and my son went with a book store. I got them huge calculators to do their inventory with and so far it's been a huge hit ( we did a little last week ). I highly recommend it. I am using it as a sortof bridge between elementary Math concepts and Pre-Algebra. I have also schuduled time to test their math skills using a placement test. I am debating doing LifePacs which we are currently using this year for Lang. Arts or doing Teaching Textbooks.

LifePacs for Lang. Arts is rather simply, I aim for 45 mins a day 5 days a week, at the end of the week I look back and make sure we are avg. about 5 pages a day that allows us to finish up the books by April/May and start again in July/Aug as we school year around.

I picked up the Hobbit and Vertias Press companion guide. I have looked through it and would like to add some cooking/to go along with it. Ideally before it comes out on DVD in the late Spring/Summer (hopefully)!

I have to plan my son to start reading Hunger Games and do some sort of comparison with the movie (which he has already seen, I know backwards :p My daughter is finishing the book this week and really enjoyed it, even read it during her free-time I think she wants to do something cooking related with it and I hope to get her to at least discuss the differences from the book/movie, of course I have to read it which I am only on chapter 4 and will be the last person to read it in my clan.

My daughter has asked to read Match which my husband and I enjoyed so I am thinking am still debating what sortof things I can have her do with it, she loves to design clothes so I was thinking of having her design the dresses or something with fashion. Not sure, something fun and engaging.

Science and History are up in the air. The kids want to keep pluging along with a Mythology study. We started early Dec reading Norse Myths I think we may keep it up and then go on to Greek. For Science, I am debating what to do as we have done a lot int he last 6 months and my son needs to do more work in his LifePacs so I am probably going to have him do some nonfiction reading of interest in science and have him spend more time on his Lang. Arts to catch up. My daughter really wants to start on highschool but we've never been big on formal science so I am thinking of starting her on 7th grade which would give my son time to do extra work each day.

Planning field trips is also on my list at least having a handy list of homeschool days and placing them on the calendar for the Jan-May if at all possible.

For my little guy we are using Abeka Preschool, no pressure just fun, loves the coloring-type pages and simple crafts. He is about 1/2 through 1 book so I am going to the Live Meeting in our area at the end of the month. If you use Abeka and go to the meeting you can save $ depending on what you purchase/buy and you get free shipping no matter how much you spend or don't spend which I love.

I'm in the middle of redoing plans. I had a student coming one day a week for fun project type stuff with ds, and due to family illness, he has returned to school. I had to take a week off before Christmas to help my sister who has a special needs child. I'm all thrown off my original schedule now. I'm trying to decide if I want to do school next week or wait until the 7th to start back. I really, really need to get the house organized because we've had a rushed few weeks and things are crazy here. I'm leaning more and more to the 7th. Dd in high school has a couple of subjects she has to stay up with for outside activities (Spanish class weekly and Biology labs every other week), so she'll be working next week on those subjects. I've thought about doing something with ds, too, just so I can count a couple of those as school days on our calendar.

Me. We start back Jan 28 for the start of our new school year -so I am starting planning for that. Yesterday I finished off history planning for the first term. Today I have to sign up the kids for swimming lessons. I'd like to plan some more but in laws are staying for most of this month and I have to sneak in planning around them wanting to go out and do things which is tough.

I need to start buying our new books and school things.
