Fyi, Lori, most of these links were broken.

The only list I have found that I haven't seen mentioned were this list of historical fiction and this set of lists on various themes.

I also find the various ALA and YALSA award winners useful. They're not the be all end all, but they're good to be aware of.

Caldecott Winners (picture books)

Newbery Winners (middle grades books)

Geisel Award Winners (this one is very new for early readers, so not many things on there)

The ALA Notable Lists (useful for new books)

Printz Winners (for YA books)

Coretta Scott King Award Winners (for African-American authors)

There are more... the ALA has a lot of awards. :)

To get British booklilsts, I google Year "X" booklist or reading list. There are many schools that put up their reading lists. There are also a number of national organisations with lists that are great.

They tend to focus more on fantasy than the American lists (or that is my experience, I wonder what others think?).

This table has the US grades vs UK years. UK year = US grade + 1.

I've compared enough curriculum to know that grade levels are the biggest scam going in education, so I don't look for book lists cataloged that way. Here are some of the best I've found:

Books that Build Character by Kilpatrick and Wolfe

A Thomas Jefferson Education by De Mille ( Booklists in the back are worth the price of the book.)

Honey For a Child's Heart by Hunt

Honey for Teen's Heart by Hunt and Hampton

All Through the Ages by Miller (Combines several books with booklists )

Great Books also has a website but most of the books listed are not directed to children.

Each Learning Through History Magazine has so many recommendations for all ages if you can get a hold of any. Last I heard they were out of print, but if you know people who've done TWTM for a long time, they may have copies they can loan you.
