We recently jumped on the bandwagon and got Grammar Island. My 3rd grader (just turned 9) and my first grader (6yo) absolutely love it. I don't expect my younger one to retain any of it, she just wants to hear the story. I think I could have started this book slightly before third grade with my 9yo. My 3rd grader has already been exposed to some of the topics through Shurley English which for the most only covers sentence parsing (we don't do the SE writing). I can't speak for 6th grade, but I suspect it will depend on your child's writing level. We think these books are great.

I'd probably start at the Island level with a 3rd grader.

With a 6th grader, it's a little harder to decide - how is her writing? What else are you using for writing? How much other grammar instruction has she had? If not a lot, I would start with the Town level. If she's already writing multi-paragraph reports and is very solid with basic grammar (i.e. can parse compound and complex sentences by parts of speech, phrases, clauses, etc. & already understands verbal phrases) you might be ok with Voyage.

There is a lot of repetition in the grammar books, but each level adds complexity - i.e. you get all the basic parts of speech/parts of sentence in Island, verbals are added in Town, etc. The meat of the grammar application instruction actually comes in the writing books. Paragraph Town was a nice complement to Writing with Skill.

I think I would start vocabulary with Caesar's English (Town level) with my 6th grader, regardless of what you decide about the other books. CE 1 (Town) and CE2 (Voyage) contain the vocabulary words most commonly used in classic literature, as well as lessons on Latin stems. I wouldn't want to start halfway through that list - because he actually begins with the most common words in CE1.

Hope that helps.
