swellmomma
I am still coming up with my plan for next year with my youngest 2 and got to looking at MP curric. I know it is classical education, and not focused on history. Is it more LCC in nature? And has anyone here used the K or 1st grade program? If I went that way for next year dd5 will be a young 6 yr old(turns 6 mid sept) and registered grade 1, but will be doing a hybrid year of K/1st. She is not reading yet, but writes neatly and uniformly, she knows her letters and can do copywork and if I spell out a word for her she can write it. Which level would you go with? K or 1st. Seeker of Schole
Hmmm. I'll try answering this, and hope that someone with more experience will also anser. If you can only do one, start with K and modify the writing assignments. Since she is not reading yet, I don't think I would jump into 1st, but because she is writing well I would focus less on the writing in the K program and do more narration. Oh, and to answer your first question, jest it is more LCC.
IceFairy
I am looking at the MP 1st grade literature for DS for next year (and will probably use it) and when I posted about it on another board, a few moms told me that a kiddo should be reading before starting it. DS will actually do mostly 2nd grade work next year but since there is a HUGE jump from 1st to 2nd with MP, we will do 1st for lit...since he is reading pretty well. Sahamamama
I don't have any experience with MP packages or their K program. We did use Story Time Treasures and More Story Time Treasures last year with my oldest for 1st grade and really enjoyed the course. IMO, this was perfect for 1st grade. I ordered two more sets for my twin K'ers, but decided to wait until 1st grade, even though they were 5.5 when they started K (and my oldest was just 5 when she started). There's enough writing in STT/MSTT that it seems best right where MP places it -- for 1st grade. This year we are doing the 2nd grade Literature Guides for (1) The Courage of Sarah Noble; (2) Mr. Popper's Penguins, and (3) Beatrix Potter Tales. We're not going to do the guide to Little House in the Big Woods -- saving that for next year, because all four guides would have been too much (we also did 6 weeks of poetry study with Evan-Moor guides, well worth doing). There is a TON of writing in the 2nd grade literature guides. My 2nd grader can manage it, but even I think it's a lot of writing for that level of student. You could reasonably do some of the 2nd grade guides in 3rd grade and still not be short-changing the student. I agree with the above poster, there is a huge jump from 1st to 2nd with the Lit Guides. One thought -- If I had known how much writing was involved in the MP Literature Guides, I would have realized that MP Lit 2 + WWE 2 are enough for Composition for the year! I had something else lined up (WWW), but we quickly ditched it in favor of our other materials. HTH.
VeritasMama
My son is using Grade 2 this year, I discovered MP through LCC, MP is Latin centered. I use Singapore math instead of Rod and Staff. I would start in K. The phonics and reading in K is closer to what a typical 1st grader would be doing in a school setting. It was too advanced for my son, who has reading delays, so we revisited it I'm 1st grade.
MamaChristina
Definitely start with Kindy if she isn't reading yet. There is quite a bit of writing. I'm using it a second time this year and enjoying it's simplicity and effectiveness.

swellmomma
Well it sounds like it won't be the fit I was hoping for. I thought I would be doing the gr 2 with ds who will be 10 and in 4th by then,. but it sounds like even that will be too hard for him. If based on reading ability I would have to have him in the K program too...well back to the drawing board.
