lea1 Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I am looking to buy a netbook and have been doing some research on them. I find such conflicting information and reviews that it is very confusing. I am planning to use it for day-to-day web access, such as amazon, blogs, researching homeschool stuff, email, news sites, etc., reading books, reading pdf's, word processing, etc. That's pretty much it. I want something that is lightweight and travels easily but speedy enough to use daily without getting frustrated at response time. Anyone using a netbook that they love? Quote
elegantlion Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I had an HP Mini 110 that I loved. It lasted 18 months before the motherboard went bad. I am still mourning its loss, but refused to replace it (I went back to standard laptop). I loved the portability, the battery life, the power. It was one zippy little machine. When it died we took it in and the computer guy said he does not recommend netbooks because they are made in a way (can't remember the details of what he said) that makes them not as reliable long-term. We've had HP products for years and been pleased. In fact the laptop the netbook replaced still works fine, although its speed is geriatric. The netbook was the one dud. I couldn't afford to spend another 300.00 for something to last such a little time. Quote

It would be interesting to see some stats on them. Quote
MomtoCandJ Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I've had my acer NetBook for about 2 years and haven't had any issues with it Quote
lea1 Posted December 21, 2012 Author Posted December 21, 2012 I've had my acer NetBook for about 2 years and haven't had any issues with it Actually, I was leaning towards an Acer because Consumer Reports rated it as their number one choice. It is the Acer Aspire One A0722-0022. Which one do you have? Is it speedy? Quote
Georgiana Daniels Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I've had mine for at least two years now and it's still running. Don't LOVE it, per se, but it gets the job done when I'm on the move. Oh, it's an ASUS. Quote
Guest inoubliable Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I've had my Acer Aspire for a couple of years now. It's been up on a shelf for over a year of that time. The pin inside the charger port disconnected and it gets no power. When I called Acer about it, they basically told me "yeah. It happens a lot. A local repair shop can fix that for you." :glare: I found a lot of complaints about it online when I was looking up repair shops and trying to figure out if I could fix it myself. It would require taking the whole thing apart and soldering a new part on. $5 for the part. $120 for the labor involved. Not sure if newer models are having the same issue, but I'd get an extended warranty if you go with Acer. Quote

Oh, it's an ASUS. I was looking at one of the Asus netbooks first but I read so many negative reports about how slow it was that I started looking at others. What don't you like about it? Quote

From everything I am reading, it sounds like the extended warranty might be a good idea regardless of which one I end up choosing. Quote
Shawna in Texas Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 We have 3 Acer Aspires. Two 10" and my newest, an 11.6". One of 10" is nearly 5 years old. I accidentally destroyed the HD a couple years ago, but replaced it for $40 and installed Ubuntu on it. We've replaced the battery and charger once. It still works fine. The second 10" is about a year and a half. It has 1G ram and dd plays World of Warcraft and Mindcraft on it. It also has Ubuntu dual installed. My 11.6" is only a couple months old, 2G ram, dual installed Fedora. It's zippy enough for my needs. Quote
Georgiana Daniels Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 I was looking at one of the Asus netbooks first but I read so many negative reports about how slow it was that I started looking at others. What don't you like about it? I think it was mostly the windows software updates, which isn't a brand issue. If I could figure out how to stop the updates in the middle of my work, I think I'd be happy. Quote
Deb in NZ Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 We have 2 Acer Aspire netbooks that are 4+ years old. They are actually newer & faster than our desktop computer. Dd used one of the netbooks at uni. It was her only computer & it worked fine. Mid-way through her final year we did get her a separate monitor to hook the netbook up to as she was finding it frustrating to have to scroll this way & that to see the project she was working on. But at the same time dd loved the small size of the netbook as it was very portable & could easily be used on buses, etc. without bothering others sitting near her. Quote
Mandamom Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 I have the acer aspire and it is over 2.5 years old. I have an extra power cord and purchased a battery at some point. Otherwise, all is well. I had another one prior to that and I accidentally closed the power cord in the keyboard. It fried the screen and I ended up replacing the computer. It was my fault, though. It isn't as fast as my husband's newer laptop but it does the job. I watch hulu and netflix, I surf the web and do some light word processing. My only problem with it is since the change of this board to this new format I can't see the who is posting because I can't see the whole screen. I haven't had that problem with other sites nor the previous format of this board. All that to say, I really like this computer and have no plans to replace it anytime soon. Quote
