blondeviolin
She's been reading Beverly Cleary, EB White, and Roald Dahl. I want to get her a "fun" book for Christmas. I looked at Barnes and Noble today, but all the books in that section that looked fun-ish were books like Dork Diaries and Diary of a Whimpy Kid, which I have no problem with, but I think their target age is a bit higher. I don't want a picture book because we have a million and get plenty from the library. I also want the book to last. Thoughts?
Farrar
I second Judy Moody. Sweet, easy, slightly better written than the other girl series books. Or Ivy and Bean - also cute, light, girl series. A totally different option would be The Sisters Grimm - fantasy, funny, quirky, about at that level. Or how about a graphic novel? Giants Beware was really cute. Or maybe Rapunzel's Revenge? It's tough because there are a lot of great fun books for that reading level, but many of them may be above her head at age 6. Deniseibase
My 6YO son is really into the Hank the Cowdog books - they are seriously funny, there have been times we have read them aloud and the whole family has started laughing. Farrar
My son liked Judy Moody. Both of mine did too. And Ivy and Bean. And pretty much every "girl" book I've ever read them or given them. :D But I know this thing called gender matters to some parents and kids. ChristineW
Lulu and the Brontosaurus and Lulu Walks the Dogs are both cute. Ivy and Bean are wonderful. So is the Clementine series by Sara Pennypacker.
reign
Mine loves anything by Judy Blume. Exspecially the Fudge books. She laughs out loud while reading. She also likes ivy &bean and the boxcar children.
blondeviolin
She didn't care for Judy Moody, really. LOVED Ramona. She did the Lulu books and loved those too. She read the first Ivy and Bean, but when I suggested the second t the library, she nixed it. She's actually not a girly girl, and I don't think she identifies with a lot of girly themes. I'll look into the rest of these on Amazon, thanks!

Guest Lauren80
Even though it has some dark moments, I would recommend Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Another one I really enjoyed reading my children was Mr Gum and the Biscuit Billionaire by Andy Stanton.
Rivka
Pippi Longstocking. There's a nice edition illustrated by Lauren Child (of Charlie and Lola fame). Mrs. Piggle Wiggle.

redsquirrel
my son loves "The Unicorn's Secret" series by Katherine Duey. He just adores them. They are written at a slightly more challenging level than say a magic tree house, and the story was much better than I expected. The vocabulary was good and the plot was even slightly interesting. The books had lots of things certain kids like. There is a poor but resourceful orphan girl, a horse that is really a unicorn, a BABY UNICORN, bad guys, little bits of danger that isn't really dangerous, helpful gypsies, girl living on her own in the woods, a PUPPY, a mystery, and a magical ending....really for a kid like mine, it just doesn't get any better. Oh, and the resourceful orphan girl learns to read in the story, because reading is the most important thing you can learn to do. There is a second series by the same author called The Fairy's Promise that my son also loved. I wish she would write more because they were just perfect for my kid. When he was 6 I read them to him (several times) and now that he is almost 8 he reads them to himself. There is also the Catwings series, another favorite around here. My 6 yo isn't reading independently yet, but these sound right up our interest-alley. Off to see if our library has them!
