JadeOrchidSong
I will give her a restaurant gift card for her and dh to eat out and spend time together. I have never done this before and I think she'll like it. However, I think this is not enough. I feel I need to get her something more tangible. I got her a very nice neck Ace and some chocolate for her birthday earlier this month. Any suggestions? She is in her late 60s. Thanks! tabrizia
It maybe too late, but I always do a photobook of the kids this past year (Jan - Dec 2012) for my MIL along with a few new books for her. DH and I use to spend a lot more time coming up with gifts, only to realize she doesn't really use anything we get her, even if it is on her list, so this has been her gift for the past few years and it is working well. Chris in VA
How about a calendar with pics of your kids? We use Vistaprint, but it may be too late for that. You can usually order them at a drug store, tho. We are going to use some of dd's flower pics (she takes nice ones) to make stationery for her grandma. You buy the actual paper/cards/envelopes at Staples and then print them out.
Anne
Off the top of my head: A nice framed photo of the grandchildren, wall calendar, slippers, gloves, socks, soft bedsocks, nice hand lotion, nice "leash" for her reading glasses. Does she have a kindle - an amazon gift card for kindle books. That's all I've got off the top of my head. Anne
dsmith
We got mil her favorite salon shampoo, conditioner and hairspray. Money has been tight and I know she hasn't been buying them. We also pay for them to go to a small resort where the whole family goes during the summer.
JadeOrchidSong
Thanks! You have given me some good ideas. Hand lotion and soft bedsocks sound good!
m0mmaBuck
We got MIL a gift cert for a manicure and a tree topper for their Christmas tree. I also knitted a scarf for her.
Farmgirl70
Mine is going to get Season 1 of Downton Abbey! They love to watch movies and I am pretty sure she'll like the series, though she hasn't watched it yet.
Mommee & Baba
I'm usually not good at gift ideas for in laws. This year I think I'm doing the best I've done so far. I've sewn quilted drink coasters for all the families on my dh's side. I made his mother a set too, but I also bought her 3 frames that are matching and will all together hold 10 photo's. We had NICE family pictures taken and I'll be putting them into the frames and wrapping them for her. My mother is getting a NEW fluffy and cozy robe this year. She's mentioned several times how her robe is old and needs replaced. My mother is also getting the same frame/picture setup that I'm gifting my mother-in-law. My mother is terrible about putting pictures up because she never buys frames. So I'm doing that extra step for her this year! Hope some of that helps with an idea! Just give her a great frame with an update family picture!
BrookValley.
My go-to for hard-to-buy-for relatives (e.g., my mom, dad, and in-laws, who either don't need stuff or just buy it when they need it, anyway) is a nice gift card, like you're already doing, included with a hand-picked gift basket with consumables that I know they like. So, for my mom for example, I'll get a gift card to a restaurant or store she likes then fill a basket/gift bag with k-cups, hair stuff, Burt's Bees products, snack stuff like nuts, a few sodas she likes (she's after the mini glass coca-cola this year). Then they have something that is both enjoyable and useful.
ScoutTN
I have a hard time buying for my MIL too. Two things that have been good recently are pears from Harry and David and gift cert for theater tickets to the local (very good) theater company.
