lots-o-rice
I am doing LL8 and didn't buy the accompanying book with poems and short stories. I have been able to find all the poems and stories online for free except for this one: "Reflections" by Lafcadio Hearn. So, I am looking for something else to substitute. I need something to demonstrate symbolism. The only book that comes to mind for me is Lord of the Flies. I de-symbolized that book to DEATH in freshman lit in HS. I'd rather not resort to that one if possible, but maybe. We are ahead of schedule, so a book is fine. Any suggestions? Thanks K
Lily_Grace
The Giver? It's a little young, but good. Or The Hunger Games, maybe.
ccolopy
I'd also suggest The Giver. My DS read it this year for Oak Meadow's 8th grade English course and my nephew studied it in high school (9th maybe?), so I wouldn't say it's too young. Lori D.
I suggest sticking with a short story, as longer works have SO many other things going on in them, it is difficult to find and to focus just on a single literary element such as symbolism. Below are some substitute ideas. BEST of luck! Warmly, Lori D. The Chrysanthemums (Steinbeck) -- very brief article on use of symbolism in Crhysanthemums The Tell-Tale Heart (Poe) -- Sparknotes, paragraph on symbolism in Tell-Tale Heart The Mask of the Red Death (Poe) The Last Leaf (Henry)
ThursdayNext
The Red Badge of Courage is a good one. It's a classic, but short and manageable for 8th grade. I also remember that Hawthorne's short stories are heavy with symbolism.
lots-o-rice
Thanks for the suggestions. I think Ds will go with a Poe story. He was intrigued by the weirdness. :) Also, my other ds is reading "The Bells" in LL7, so this works out perfectly. I will keep the other ideas jotted down in the book for next year. Thanks again, K
