visitor Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 Hi all, I hope for some help. I live in europe and my DS is doing great with his math . I decided to teach him math with Singapore because of there great result and math is very easy for him. I looked op the site but can only buy the US and standard (California) edition. My question is are the both at the same level as the original Singapore curriculum ? Or is it more easy? Because I don't live in the US I prefer the same level as in Singapore . I hope someone can help me out because I have to buy the books as soon as possible Quote
Dmmetler Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 I went from using the California standards edition to the New Primary Maths used in Singapore at book 3A, and there really wasn't a difference in difficulty level. There were some minor changes in topics, particularly in money and measurement, but nothing major. The primary change is cosmetic-NPM (and, I assume, My Pals are Here) uses Singapore names, place names, foods, cultural references, and so on. California Standards uses US ones. My DD preferred NPM because she loved those elements that, to her, were novel. Quote
visitor Posted December 15, 2012 Author Posted December 15, 2012 Thanks for your reply you really made my happy could you please tell me were I can buy NPM? Quote
Steven Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 The standards edition has an inexpensive Home Instructor's Guide, which facilitates teaching the Singapore/Asian method. Is the old U.S. edition really the same as the NPM? If not, I would assume that it is somewhat difficult to buy, compared to either the Standards or U.S. edition. We have been very happy with the Standards edition, which still has a somewhat exotic charm to it (i.e., names, foods, etc.) Quote
Dmmetler Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 New Primary Maths is the current Syllabus used in Singapore, so no, it's not the same (US edition is the old syllabus), but it's really not that different. I found sellers on Ebay (as a matter of fact, I moved over at 3A because I bought a lot of "Singapore Math, grade 3" on Ebay and discovered only after it arrived that I had a Singapore edition, not a US one), and didn't pay any more than I would for the California Standards edition-but I bought mostly from US Military families stationed in areas where the books were readily available. From Europe, I don't know which would be worse shipping-wise. From the USA, there's really no reason to go with NPM over Standards-the only reason I stuck with it was that my DD really enjoyed the extra cultural elements (we never had to google to figure out what a question was asking using Standards in 1st-2nd, but we did regularly in 3rd-5th). If you need/want the hand-holding of a teacher's guide, I agree, the California Standards is the way to go because they have the HiG available. I don't think you can buy the teacher's editions for NPM, and even if you could, I imagine it would be focused on classroom teaching, not individual instruction. Quote
blondeviolin Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 We really like the Standards edition. I approach math from a very Asian approach, but it's still nice to have the enrichment and games that are in the HIG. Quote

Kathleen. Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 US and Standards are basically the same. I use the US edition right now, but am considering switching to the Standards in 4th grade because new topics are slowly added like data analysis. The Standards version is also aligned with the Core Standards. I already have all the third grade books, they have been easy to use. Quote
Reya Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 The US edition has US standard measurements as well as metric. :) So does Standards, but that's how the US edition differs from the original! Quote
