Catwoman
Sambucol was recommended on another thread as a way to treat/prevent viruses, and I'm wondering if anyone can give me more info about it. I noticed that there are several brands of elderberry syrup, and I have no idea whether one is better than another, or if this is something to take every day or just when you feel like you're getting sick. If you take it every day, how much do you take? (Ds12 is "adult-sized," so I don't need the kids' dosage.) Do you use the liquid, the tablets, or regular pills? THANKS! :)
Catwoman
Bumping in the hope that someone will have an answer for me. I have to go to the store later, and I'd like to buy some of this stuff! :)
plain jane
I'll take a stab at this since I use it regularly but I'm on my phone so I'll be brief. ;) My experience has been that Sambucol brand is the best both in terms of taste and effectiveness. I use the syrup, and I do give it to ally kids, except the littlest. It is not something you are supposed to take every day. Just when you start to feel you are coming down with something (and continue for a few days) or if you have been exposed and want to give your immune system a boost. I discontinue once I am feeling better. Rince, repeat. ;) If I take it early enough at onset if symptoms I can feel it working within minutes and usually I am all better after just one or two doses. If I do that, I can usually head off getting it at all. If I ignore that feeling, usually by the next day I've really got something, and if I take it then, it's usually not effective, at least not in preventing it entirely. I have so learned my lesson on this. I often take the "immune support" variety of Sambucol (or the other brand Sambucus) that has echinacea, vit. C and zinc in addition to the elderberry. I figure just throw the kitchen sink at it. :)

Plink
Elderberries are good for the immune system? That's great. We make elderberry jelly, and syrup for our pancakes from the berries that we find on the side of the road every year. The kids love it, but I never thought of it as anything other than just plain old fruit. Does anyone have a link showing how much is recommended to support immunity? This may be our new favorite medicine.
Plink
Good golly Miss Molly! I just googled Sambucol - $2 an ounce! I have a gold mine stored in my basement.
