EKS
My son is currently taking Algebra I at his b&m school. The school is using the Larson Algebra I text. This text seems to teach by example and doesn't actually explain the concepts or indicate how things are related to one another. And his teacher, who is supposed to be providing this, does not. I'm looking for a book that is heavy on explanation and doesn't teach through the problem sets (otherwise I'd use Jacobs or AoPS). Is there such a thing? Sebastian (a lady)
If a narrative approach would work try Algebra the Easy Way or the Danica McKellar series that starts with Math Doesn't Suck. You might also try Khan Academy or Alcumus videos. They are keyed to specific topics so you can dip in and out. And the videos are free. Dana
I really like Elementary & Intermediate Algebra by George Woodbury. I taught from it for a number of years. I like the 3rd edition best, but 1st or 2nd will still be okay. (I made comments for the 3rd edition & I really do see some good changes to it.) Apparently Woodbury was just a couple years ahead of me at UCSB, so since we had the same instructors, that may be why when teaching from the text, he says things as explanation in the text that I typically say in class as warnings to students. I think it's the best text I've used to teach Algebra I & II.
EKS
I think Algebra the Easy Way might be just the thing. This is for my 10yo, who does very well with the narrative approach. Thanks so much for the suggestion!
