How to help elderly neighbor?

Recommended Posts

Our next door neighbor is 85, still does volunteer work every day, drives, keeps her home and yard perfect, really sharp but she is very easily swayed.

Our neighbors across the street are..well..trash. The "family" is the Mom (on disability), 21 year-old daughter (in jail along with her former live-in boyfriend), 16 year-old daughter, her 22 year-old boyfriend and their 6 week old baby.:glare:

The now jailed boyfriend used to always go to our elderly neighbor to borrow money. She didn't trust him and finally told him to quit coming over and get a job (he is in jail for robbing churches so he didn't take her advice).

Today, my neighbor mentions to me that she is tired of the 16 year old coming over to borrow money all the time!! Apparently, this girl has been asking for $10-15 dollars a couple times a week because her baby is sick and needs medicine!! Total BS!! She is on every program the state has so her baby probably has more coverage then I do. Every person in that house smokes; I know they are using that money for beer and smokes. I told my neighbor that they are taking advantage of her because she is so nice and to not lend them anymore money.

What should I do? Stay out of it? Call my neighbor's son to make sure he knows what is going on? Any advice? I'm so mad that this girl is using her baby to scam people!!

Did you tell the elderly lady that there is no way the girl needs money for meds for her baby? Is she likely to keep giving the girl money?

This makes me so mad! I dont know what I would do. I'd probably clue the elderly lady's son in. The could be robbing her blind. What losers!!!

Yes, I told her at length ALL of the reasons she shouldn't give them money. I'm pretty sure she won't be able to say no when this young girl tells her about her poor sick baby.

I used to have a little compassion for this 16 year old trapped in that life. Lying to an old woman about a sick baby though, cured me of any compassion I might have for her!!

Then definitely tell her son. This makes me so mad!

Yes, I would talk to her son. And if she's got a regular mailbox I'd also encourage him to get her a locking/security mailbox. While that dear lady is away from home doing good deeds I would hate to see someone (who knows when she's gone and when her mail is delivered) take advantage of the situation and be able to steal her mail and possibly use the info. for identity theft crimes.

Aren't I the trusting soul?!

(If I were you, I'd get one for myself, too.)
