LifeLovePassion
I am looking at getting this for my 1st grader. We've done Alpha Phonics and she is catching on, but each day is a struggle. She is horrible at sounding out words and will drop suffexes and miss words she knows (at, the, etc.). I am also suspecting dyslexia with her. What can you tell me about your experiences with the Foundations beta test? What is a lesson like. How do your kids receive it? (she fights me in all subjects right now, really a "fun" time around here).
dbmamaz
i just bought it but havent gotten the workbook yet (i got the teachers book as download) - and ony for spelling, not reading. But I was kinda excited reading about the games - that was one of the things they emphasized was that often teachers dont do enough drilling, but if you make the drilling as fun games, its easier to get it done. i'm a bit unsure tho that I dont understand it yet . . hopefully it will be clearer when the rest of it gets here. A home for their hearts
We are using LOE's Foundations. It is a very gentle introduction to reading through spelling. The first 7 lessons focus on phonemic awareness. Some of the activites include feeling your throat to see it it vibrates when you say a sound, having the student watch their mouths in a mirror when the say a sound to see what their mouth is doing, blending sounds together to make words and then eventually segmenting words into their phonemes. Each lesson then introduces one phonogram at a time. You teach how to write the phonogram and all of the sounds that phonogram makes are taught. I'll have to come back later to finish. Here is a link to the forums at LOE. http://www.logicofenglish.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=21&sid=bf38c66748eec06e2c51a5814dd20ce9
BugsMama
We are beta testing Foundations, and also use Essentials. I did a sort of review of Foundations today. I'm planning on doing a day in the life for it later.

Try watching some of their teacher training videos on You Tube- the dictation one really helped me.
ElizabethB
Here is a fun game you can play for phonics, it makes both real and nonsense words. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Phonics/concentrationgam.html Also, I would use Alpha-Phonics across instead of down to stop any guessing habits and just work on sounding out words in isolation for a while, that should stop some of the problems. When phonics is better learned, then you can go back to sentences and stories.
