Mandylubug
My girls like Reading Eggs so far and we will continue to use it through the trial period. However, before I purchase I would like to know if there are other programs similar that measure their progress, etc. They have used all the levels of starfall.com. Also, is there a website that acts as a diagnostic test to measure their reading abilities, etc?
Tidbits of Learning
If I were wanting to know where they were compared to their peers. I would just give a standardized test like the CAT test. My older ds used Headsprout when he was younger b/c he had access to it from the school. It is similar to Reading Eggs with the maps and such. It is now called something else. http://www.mimio.com/en-NA/Products/MimioSprout-Early-Reading.aspx?_id=064914BF5130473EAE50557F1DDE881D&_z=z I have no idea the cost. My k'er used Reading Eggs last year, but we got a really good deal through HSBC. If they have been through all of Starfall though, I guess I would move to reading for fluency. Did they learn to read with starfall? My ds' subscription to reading eggs ran out at lesson 97 out of 120 and Reading Eggs won't do a monthly subscription and we didn't need 6 more months so he just moved to reading. We got library cards from the local library districts and he checks out early readers. I just measured my kids' reading abilities by the progress they made with checking out more and more difficult readers at the library and moving to chapter books. For me, if my child had finished Starfall or another program (Headsprout, Reading Eggs...), then we would move to Bob books, then the 1,2,3 stage early readers, and then to chapter books. tomandlorih
I've not explored this but it's free=D http://www.readingbear.org/
reign
My 4yo used headsprout this year. I liked the format better than readig eggs. She loved it and did very well. If your daughters are already reading though I don't think it would be worth it. Funnix has its free special going on this month. It's not exactly fun like the other sites but it is on a computer! TeachingMyTwo
You may like Destination Reading by Houghton Mifflin, they have levels 1 & 2 and it covers some reading comprehension along with blends, etc and up. they offer a trial on their website and then you can buy it discounted through homeschool buyers co-op. We bought the Destination Math and i have been pretty happy with it. http://www.hmhinnovation.com/DR-DA.php
