indigomama
Apparently, a 7 & 11 year old were involved in an armed car jacking! Here's the article from the Oregonian, this took place in Portland. Where do kids these young even hear about these kinds of things? From reading neighbor comments, it appears they get in a lot of trouble and their parents aren't much better. I hate the idea of kids being removed from their homes, but if this is what they are learning from their parents, I wonder if foster care would help. Or intensive parenting support and involvement from outside sources. Anyone else surprised? What do you think would help these situations? Χάων
I cannot imagine being 7 or even 11 and doing this type of thing. I cannot imagine my 8 year old doing anything like this. I hope that the boys get the help they need.
Parrothead
They hear about these things from their parents, TV and school. That shouldn't be a surprise. There is very little that will help in these situations. That genie isn't going back in the bottle. Our sense of propriety and of what is good and acceptable is in the toilet. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

My oldest, 8 doesn't watch or play anything like that but if he did, he would not attempt to emulate it. He knows the difference of real and pretend. So, yeah, I'm still surprised. I guess, they just seem so very young to me. I feel so sorry for them.
jelbe5
Worse than this happens all the time. When I worked as a social worker years ago, an 11 year old in the agency I worked for ran away from the group home, was used by a street gang to commit murder and then was executed by that same gang when too much attention was placed on that youth and gang by police. Gang members use young people all the time for bigger crimes. Kids turn to gangs because initially the gang offers "love", "acceptance" and the chance to be in a "family". These kids are not brought up in loving homes where the parents are looking out for their best interests. And I guarantee you those boys knew exactly what they were doing and that the person they shot wouldn't just magically pop back to life to try again. I cannot begin to fathom kids so young doing something like that. :(
indigomama
I did not grow up naive to certain ways of the world, but I still am just so shocked when such young child commit or attempt to commit such serious and awful crimes. And I find it equally awful that both children, from one family, would be sent back to that family, without an investigation first. It seems pretty obvious that the children are being exposed to these things within their family.
