wanna help me set up for new flat screen tv?

It might be a bit before I can check in, but I'm desperate for ideas....

Our current set up is a 25" picture tube tv in a large wall unit that holds the tv, cd player, receiver, video and cd players, cable box, and turn table. Also, there's gaming stuff, games, cds, dvds, lp records, and vhs tapes, and books. And, there's pictures and baskets on top. I do like being able to walk up and having all the electronics at my level.... but I think that is about to be over.

Now I will have a 50" flat screen on a 2 - 2 1/2 ft. high cabinet because that is what you supposedly do. I don't want to have the tv high and have to crank my neck to watch it. I had the idea of getting a media cabinet and a tall bookcase to put next to it (to the right). It might have to be deep to accommodate the records and extra electronics that may not fit under the tv. Maybe doors on the bottom to hide the ugly stuff. Also, the tv needs to be to the left and not centered between two bookcases.

Oh the pain of transition....(but I know that once its all said and done I will love it all), please tell me where you put your flat screen tv's, what you put them on, where the stuff goes, what you like, don't like, etc. Dh wants to get a digital receiver (instead of a soundbar) and use his two speakers (they are narrow, but are in the mix too). Plus we'll have to add the center speaker as well. All of this has to fit in a 9 ft. span.

Help! and thanks!

Ha! That's what we do for a living. There is no one right answer. It is entirely dependent on the room, its uses, and the people's desires! Your instinct is correct though, in that many folks mount their screens too high (usually not professionals, but they mostly will give into the realities of people's desires.) You may want to check in with a local company. Depending on the company, you can get a lot of bang for your buck, and just pay for the advice or labor you need. Those that don't sell equipment can be well-versed at working with your existing pieces that you wish to reuse.

Good luck and have fun!!!

We are looking into doing this as well. The logistics of it all have me wanting to run for the hills! I would really like mine above the fireplace although that would be a bit high. But my biggest concern is I don't want a bunch of wires or equipment on my mantle. I'm not sure if that's even possible. I do have an entertainment center currently with our tube TV. It will only hold a 32" flat screen but I was hoping to get something bigger.

Is it a good idea to mount a flat screen above a fireplace? If not I will either have to go with a smaller TV or buy a new entertainment center.

Thanks!

I'm not sure what you're asking...how to physically arrange the space? Your idea of a media cabinet that hides as much stuff as possible is a good one. Our current media cabinet has mostly open shelves. Oh, the dusting I have to do!

As far as hooking it up, do you have someone who can help you? (ds 23?) My 16yo is very tech-savvy and handles all of that for us. If we didn't have him, I'd have to pay someone like nono to do it. I'm sorry but I don't believe most husbands over 40 could do it. Too much modern technology. :tongue_smilie:

The frustration is that we are middle class living in a wealthy small town..... so paying for set up will really cost. The unit will really cost. Ordering online, you can't see the quality, most are cheaply made. We have always gotten unfinished and stained ourselves. My whole house is casual, and all pieces were bought at an unfinished store in a large city. The closest is 1-2 hrs. away, then I can't get the pieces delivered. I wanted to take the divider out of my current unit, but the opening is still to small. Dh said to move the large unit over, but then there isn't enough room for a console, and I'm used to the tv being framed, not open. I still can't envision (going from left to right) large tv open on a console, then large bookcase. It seems it will look lopsided... I would love to have the equivalent of three tall bookcases with cabinets below with an opening for the tv in the first two, but that is custom... I have threatened to pay big bucks for it all because the tv is sitting at the store in pick up already bought with no where to put it here (it was on sale and running out of stock so had to buy).

U or UT?

Bill

Got the U50, have until the end of Jan. to return if we don't like it. Went into the store to look at their media centers. The sales guy said the U50s never come back. The U50 looks great in the store, fingers crossed we will like it!

Adding: We also got the blu ray you recommended. What set up do you have?
