Heathermomster
Hi there, DS just completed week 16 of IEW's ATFF. He hasn't really applied his IEW teaching to other subjects. I never learned to write the IEW way and only topically outlined in school for speech class. Never really touched outlining again until I started homeschooling DS and that was for personal study. Do some students deliberately use the KWOs for writing outside of IEW class? This probably seems like a foolish question. I guess I'm curious to know how many students actually use the skill in their day to day study. Thank-you, Heather
Pen
Starting to, but only with parental prompting. :)
mom31257
I'm not sure which units you have covered through week 16, but ds is doing SWI-A this year in a co-op class I'm leading. Ds has learned units 1, 2, and 3 thus far. We will begin report writing (Unit 4) in February, so I plan on applying it in other subjects after he learns that unit. I'm doing a world geography and habitat study with him this year, so I plan on assigning reports each month after he learns the process. 5LittleMonkeys
Yes, dd9 uses KWOs when she is writing short reports for science and history. We are just starting to learn traditional outlining as well. Once she learns how to do those then she will be probably use whichever suits what she is trying to accomplish or which she feels more comfortable with. I'm basing that on my two oldest dc. They both learned KWO and traditional methods and use the one they prefer. I can "see" IEW methods and techniques in all my dc's writing across the curriculum ... even in my oldest's WWS work. They combined three previously written paragraphs and tied them together with a master t.s. and clincher.

It's weird seeing the techniques, and I'm not certain he realizes that he's doing it. Last week, I had DS write a paragraph using history notes, He wrote the KWO and then the paragraph. He asked me if I'd insist he write the KWOs with every assignment. I replied that he'd write out a KWO as long as he needed it. I didn't make him go crazy with the dress-ups. Afterwards, I wondered whether students actually write a KWO for their work, like when they are taking a written essay exam. I never did anything like that in high school or college. mom31257
If he is using ATFF (All Things Fun and Fascinating?), he will not cover all 9 units nor all the stylistic techniques. Unit 8 covers essay writing and Unit 9 covers literary critiques. You might want to look at other theme based books for him to use. I believe that the US History, Character, and Bible theme books cover all 9 units. There are some new ones that might cover all 9 as well. Those more advanced skills would be very useful in other subjects.

I never did anything like that in high school or college. I see what you are asking. No, my older girls don't use KWO for everything they write. When they are answering essay type questions they just write (I'm sure they formulate some type of traditional outline in their minds.) KWO are used more for taking\organizing notes from other sources. Does that answer your question?

Yes, I did variations of outlining all through high school APs, college, grad school and it was how I taught essay writing both as an SAT tutor and high school teacher. I did not necessarily use the KWO methodology, but outlining every essay and essay question, most definitely.
Heathermomster
Do you know why the tutor chose to use ATFF? It is actually recommended for 3rd-5th graders. Yes, the tutor is a reading specialist, and she suggested the boys start at a lower level prior to hitting the more advanced writing concepts. The class is full of boys with dyslexia.
