Staceyshoe
I'm looking for a fairly quick biography of Helen Keller, not too simplistic but not a 200 page read aloud either. Obviously, I want ds to become familiar with a famous historical figure. Helen Keller's and Anne Sullivan's stories contain so many rich character lessons. I would like to find a book that really emphasizes that. What do you suggest?
sunriseiz
I guess it depends how thorough you want it to be and what ages will be listening. A simple one that your older DS could read is by David Adler. http://www.amazon.com/Picture-Book-Helen-Keller-Biography/dp/0823409503/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354936336&sr=8-1&keywords=helen+keller+adler It's short, but I also think it's really good. Staceyshoe
Sorry, I should have mentioned that this is for my 3rd grader and will be an independent read. We are doing living books only for history, so there is also a need to move along to the next topic without a huge time commitment to Helen Keller. He does like the David Adler books. My biggest priority (other than it not being too long) is that it really emphasizes the character qualities of these women. I appreciate the David Adler suggestion! Aurelia
We used Who Was Helen Keller?, and also worked through some of the activities in the MBtP lit unit that went with it.
3peasinapod
I could not believe how engaging Helen Keller: A Determined Life by Elizabeth MacLeod was for this age group. It has lovely photographs, a few illustrations with not-dumbed-down text. It is an advanced picture book, kind of scrapbook style. Love it! I hope to get to the others in this series as well. It was short, but I thought it was quite good. However, it's been a little while since I read it, so I can't remember emphasis on character qualities specifically. Our library has this one and most of this series and I think they were all worthwhile.
