I didn't buy one because I thought it was too small -- and I'm a big fan of my regular size iPads, so I went into the Apple store certain that I would buy the mini.

I just bought a new tablet for my dh, and I chose the 10.1" Samsung Galaxy Note. It's very nice, and also comes in a 7" size. It's fun because you can use the stylus to write on it and leave yourself notes. :) The handwriting function works very well, and you don't have to hold your wrist and hand in an odd position, like you do when you try to write on some other tablet computers.

I've had one for two weeks and I LOVE it. My dad and brother both have the bigger one and I am amazed at how much heavier they are. I really like that I can hold it in one hand, it's small enough to slide into my purse, etc., but the screen is still plenty large that I can easily read the PDFs I use for homeschooling and this board of course, haha.

I LOVE mine!! LOVE it! I have had all of the iPads. I have now sold all of the iPads (well, my adult kids have 2 of them). I will admit that the display isn't what was on my iPad 3, but I like the size so much that I just don't care. I will certainly purchase the next version as I'm sure they'll improve the display, but I don't know if I'll feel the need to have a larger iPad again.

I like how light it is, and how easy it is to hold and read on, even in bed. I could never read in bed on my bigger pads because of the weight - it just wasn't comfortable for me. I also don't really like an e-reader for that because I have to use a light and it bothers dh. With this mini, I can just dim it so it's putting off a lower level light, and read away.

I don't find it any more difficult to type on than the larger one. When I want to type really long stuff I'm going to use my iMac anyway.

I guess that is what it boils down to for me; if there is anything I can't do on an iPad, I have my computer, but for what I CAN do, I like the size and portability of the mini much more than I did my larger iPad. I don't think your daughter would be disappointed!

My boys all want one (I'm secretly coveting one based on the size alone), but dh and I decided that even if we felt like spending a small fortune or even had a small fortune to spend, we'd wait until version 2 came out in hopes of the retina display and a faster chip. But we've played with them a few different times at the store and like them quite a bit.

The weight is primarily what convinced me to buy the mini. I went to the store to compare both the big one and the mini, and the mini was so much lighter that I decided to go with it. I have arthritis and I didn't want to have to support all of that extra weight. I haven't bought it yet, waiting for the funds, but I don't think I'll change my mind.

  • 5 months later...

Do you read on yours? I am reading mixed reviews of the quality for reading. My son will read quite a bit on it.....will it be a problem? He reads on an ipad 2 right now.

I love mine! I use it every day.

I really don't read on mine so I can't help you with that. I use it to check e-mail, facebook, etc.. I also use a few aps and search the web with it. I used to read a lot on a kindle before we had a house fire. I don't think the mini would be as comfortable for reading long periods of time, but I'm not sure since I don't really use it for reading right now.

I was surprised with one at Christmas too! Absolutely love it. When my mom retired, we wanted to get her an iPad and I went back and forth about the size. She ended up with the mini and loves it. My aunt is switching to the mini as well for travel.

I never thought I would like e-books, but I love reading on my iPad.

Good to hear you all love it for reading. Several are saying to wait for the retina display but there is no word on when that may come out. Rumors range from early Sept to late Dec. We really don't want to wait.

Ipad mini arrived yesterday! He is reading a book on it now. :hurray:

I asked some of these same questions on a Mac message board (about buying now vs waiting) and some guy came on there giving me PARENTING advice. He told me that I should tell my son that if he gets the ipad mini and wants to upgrade I should make him wait a min. of 2 years to upgrade since that will teach him a lesson. :glare: What is WITH people offering unsolicited advice?????

I responded that I did NOT ask for parenting advice and I would appreciate the discussion limited to what I actually asked for to be respected.

UGH!,

I ♥ my iPad mini almost as much as I ♥ Johnny Depp. That alone should tell you how awesome it is. ;) I use it primarily for checking email, FB, taking notes, watching movies, playing games (Sudoku and 4 Pics 1 Word are my favorites) and reading (Kindle app). I have a Kindle that I actually prefer to read on (no back lighting), but have no problems reading on the mini, plus if I don't want to read, I have tons of other options.

LOVE mine! I agree with the others, the size is perfect. I can hold it in one hand, it easily slips into my diaper bag or purse, I can read one handed in bed, etc. I do still prefer my e-ink kindle for long book reading sessions, but the kindle app has a lot of nice features to make the backlight easier in the eyes too.
