Abbeygurl4
I got a World Vision catalog in the mail today and was wondering if it's a good company or not? Is it worth it to donate farm animals to impoverished people?
poiema
I do. They are a very reputable company and have been around as long as I can remember, so I trust that the money is being spent wisely.
JFJ in IL
Our church has donated through them before and this year I purchased a family of ducks as a *gift* for a family of 5 that we are close friends with. Obviously, they don't get the ducks but they receive a card from WV with our Christmas greetings, etc...on it. I believe this is a trust worthy organization and I hope that the five ducks help a family in need somewhere!
TranquilMind
I got a World Vision catalog in the mail today and was wondering if it's a good company or not? Is it worth it to donate farm animals to impoverished people? We made a decent donation to World Vision last year. Then I was bombarded all year, probably twice a month, with expensive mailings. They are decently ranked on Charity Navigator. See here. Expenses are very high in relation to donations, so I'm going with St. Jude and DAV and a couple of others this year. I love the Charity Navigator site. It is thorough in it's ratings, looking at many facets in an organization. It has helped us to change which organizations we donate to. We generally only go with those with 4 star ratings for non-local organizations. We used to donate to World Vision but also had issues with those expensive, beautiful mailings. They have a 3 star rating with Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator will help you compare charities that have similar goals too.
justasque
Apparently their president makes $380K. Ouch! Heifer does similar work.

Erica in OR
The kids and I have picked out animals to donate for two years in a row now. They enjoy paging through the brochure and making their selections to meet our final amount we have budgeted. They like the idea of giving animals, as we have our own chickens, rabbit, etc. here at home—it makes a connection for them. However, I agree with a previous poster. If you do donate, be prepared to continue to receive mailings and calls from them. I wonder if there's a way to say no thanks to everything except the catalog/brochure around Christmastime. I'd feel better about the wasted paper and expense of mailings. Erica in OR
Catherine
Wow-Heifer's CEO makes about $43,000, in comparison. $380,000 is an obscenely large salary for the CEO of a non-profit, IMO.
Elinor Everywhere
A Christian organization that I highly respect is: http://www.mercyprojects.com/ Low overhead, I know the people who run it, both in CA and Ukraine, and they are sincere, passionate, and doing a great job with the kids.
