a question for knitters

I'm a VERY beginner knitter. I made my husband a scarf a few years ago, just knitting each row (garter stitch?). I am in the process of making my son a wool diaper cover, and have mastered rib stitch. That's it. I want to know, this pattern going to be doable, and can I get it done before Christmas? How many hours for a beginner? http://pickinandthro...ng-w-satin.html

i did watch a video of knitting in the round and it looked simple enough to do, but I haven't tried it yet. Also, could i later personalize it? Could i embroider into the knitting? Is that even a thing people do, lol? (Or I could always personalize it later with ribbon printed with their names. Or...leave them blank and each person just has their own color, that might be best. For now I just need one for my son though, as he doesn't have a stocking yet.

You could do it, but depending on how fast you knit you may not get it done before Christmas. I measure my work in 15 minute increments - I knit, then count up how many rows I've done. Starting the project should tell you how long it takes until you finish it.

One tip on knitting in the round - when you cast on, make the rows face each other before you knit into the first stitch. That'll keep it from going all mobius-like. Embroidery is easy, too, if you double stitch. Go directly over the knit stitch (up, wrap around stitch above, back down) and do it like cross-stitch. OR, knit/crochet a cord and sew it on in the shape you want.

What you're looking for is a video on "Magic Looping" - check out YouTube - The Knit Witch.

A few years ago, DD and I took two half hour courses with a well meaning, but essentially useless teacher. We were on our own and YouTube saved the day. ;)

I made longies (wool pants for over diapers) not long after I learned to knit two dishcloths and a hat. ;) I would say the stocking is doable, however, you'd really have to commit to working through the problems. The hardest part for you is NOT going to be doing the actual knitting but understanding what in the world the pattern is talking about and working through it.

Look for an LYS - Local Yarn Shop. They will be your best resource. You could make the tube (the leg part) of the stocking with no issues at all. The hardest part is going to be understanding how to "turn the heel." If you've never seen it done, it's hard to visiualize.

However, also realize that for every step of the sock making process (because sock or stocking the parts are still that of a sock) are on YouTube. You just have to look for them. The visual part of YouTube is useful to me.

You could also check out Ravelry for more ideas and free patterns as well.

I'm assuming you are doing the red pattern? I consider myself a new knitter, and I could knock that out in two or three nights. BUT, I make socks. My first sock was a mess, so be prepared for some frustration, especially around the heel. I would assume you'd have the time to do it, though - it's cute! :) Go to knittinghelp.com and watch her videos if you get stuck.
