mathnmusic
Thinking about getting them for my ds8 and dd6 to spur on their enthusiasm for math (we already have BA and they love them)...but the title concerns me. These kids are on the sensitive side and I'd hate to fork over money for gruesome content (either pictoral or descriptive) that scares them. Is there more than just a cursory mention of murder and other crimes in these books? Do you think it's appropriate for math-loving but sensitive 6 and 8 year olds? Thanks in advance for your help! courtney.byrum
I haven't read them but DS8 has read the 10 he has 4-5 times since July. He doesn't like books where people die or are injured so they can't be too bad. Hopefully someone will pipe in with better info for you though :)
mathnmusic
Thank you, CourtneyB for your input! That's good to know! If there are any others out there who've read these books, I'd love to hear your thoughts too...thanks in advance.
zoo_keeper
DD7 (who is also very sensitive, it's torture trying to find a movie for the family to watch together because she'll break down if there is any sadness or even tension), has been re-reading "Awesome Arithmetricks" from the library over and over. I now have the set on my Christmas list for the girls (I just need to pull the trigger)...
dbmamaz
I've read a few with my son . . . he's not that sensitive, but iir no one dies . . . there are some 'bad guys' who 'lose' . . . i cant think of anything seriously bad. But they do have jokes about the various meanings of 'bottoms' in the fractions book, and someone here was offended because they call people dummies, i think, or stupid, for not knowing basic arithmetic. its very silly, old-style cartoon violence. road-runner style. But i admit i was at some point bothered by the way all the guys want the beautiful girl and have to buy her gifts, but its a cool resource
mathnmusic
Awesome, these are just the sorts of things I wanted to know! Thank you ladies!!
mumto2
We have used them all. Ds has read them multiple times and I don't remember anything beyond the humor already detailed.
