starwarsmomma
Son is VERY Sensitive to pain, always has been. He's also VERY VERY underweight, and pediatrician is worried this will cause him to lose more weight, but his teeth are so bad, we decided to go ahead and do braces.... So I'm stressed about that too. Ortho put top only braces on him yesterday, (bottoms next month) and it was a rough night and morning. He's trying to drink a protien breakfast drink and one piece of cinnamon toast for breakfast and that is putting him in painful tears. We're keeping up with the ibuprofin, but it doesn't seem to be helping. He says it's a sore pain. I verified nothing is POKING him, this is about sore teeth. I never had braces so this is foreign to me. Advice? Tips? HELP? Any foods that might be good? He ate eggs for lunch and dinner yesterday, but I cant think of much else to feed him... unsinkable
Oh, that's too bad. My kids had soft pasta and milkshakes. They also cut up their food very, very small. So small it was almost minced. I'd piggyback the ibuprofen with acetaminophen. Plus salt water rinses to help with swelling.
Cera
Try to have him suck on popsicles during the day, the cold will help. Ideas for food: Soup he can drink through a large straw (potato, cheese, tomato, butternut squash) Mashed potatoes Pudding Ice cream slightly overcooked pasta

BigMamaBird
Poor guy. Top braces are far more painful than bottom braces if that's any comfort. It'll hurt every time he gets them tightened, so hopefully you can figure out what works for him. My Mom always babied me and made me milkshakes and mac n' cheese. Getting to eat such yummy junk food in front of my brother was really the only good thing about having braces . . . .till I got them off and had lovely straight teeth. But while you're going through it it doesn't seem worth it.
Chris in VA
Dd has braces. She is sore when the wires and rubberbands are changed. For her, it sometimes doesn't hurt as much right away, so she eats somewhat normally. But she pays for it later, by having MORE soreness. So, we've learned to go "no chew" for about the first 24 hours. Smoothies, protein drinks, oatmeal, etc. is the way to go, here. Even toast has to be chewed, so I'd not offer that. Sorry it hurts so much! And I second the Tylenol/ibruprofen combo (not at the same time--you give ibru, then 2 hours later give tylenol)--or I give 600mg (3 pills) ibru. Tess in the Burbs
give motrin and do soft foods like pudding. My son has an aversion to smoothies/pudding so he ate applesauce for a day, lol. He didn't like anything cold b/c if the metal gets cold it can hurt teeth too. But I would keep the motrin flowing for a day until the pain eases. It will ease ((HUGS))
clarkacademy
I am on number 2 with braces! I never had either act like that but number 1 was sore, she just ate very soft foods. Number 2 was not about to go without so we blended all her food. Yep even pizza!!! She then ate with a spoon. I gave ibruprofen every 4 hours to both the girls even in the night I would wake them up for it so it wouldn't be so bad in the morning. TrixieB
Is he drinking the protein drink with a straw, or straight from the glass? The pressure from sucking on a straw can be painful. The soreness should go away within a few days and in my experience (and my kids' experience too) routine adjustments were never as painful or long-lasting as when the braces were initially put on. unsinkable
How's he doing today? I hope he's doing better!
LinRTX
The first 3-4 days after getting braces on is the most painful. The monthly adjustments do hurt , but usually just the first day. I'm on my fourth child with braces and my most sensitive to pain. Soft foods eaten with a spoon are best the first week. Something else I do is chop the meat up in a food processor, mix with gravy and serve over mashed potatoes. This works toward the end of the first week and for the monthly adjustments. Hope he feels better soon. Linda
G5052
Mine are older, but one needed Tylenol with codeine at night after the "big" installations (top, then a few months later Herbst, and then a few months later bottom). This is my tough kid that didn't cry at all with a broken bone, and who rarely complains about anything. So I knew that it was bad when they were in tears in the middle of the night. Sleeping well made all the difference though. During the day we used the normal OTC medications.
starwarsmomma
Thank you for all the tips! Lastnight he was able to eat tomato soup with a grilled cheese (he soaked the grilled cheese in the soup until it was very soggy) Today he asked for cinnamon toast (soft) and was able to eat that without complaining. He's begging for a hot dog for lunch today, so hopefully he will feel good enough for that. Thank you so much for the tips and advice. he's much better today! WagsWife
As much as chewing hurts, my dauther's ortho told her that it is the chewing motion that actually lessens the pain by keeping the blood circulating. If he avoids chewing, it is just going to make it hurt worse. Our ortho gave DD "bite waffers"--plasic disks for her to keep in her mouth to chew on. She did not like those, so insead she wet the corner of a washcloth, and kept that in her mouth to "chew" on. Any area that started to hurt, she would move the washcloth to that area and concentrated on biting there. This was the only thing that helped her.
