Bokons
I am trying to decide which spelling program to get for my 5th grade ds. He is a natural speller and would like a program where he can work independently. Would Rod and Staff spelling or Spelling Workout be better, and should I go with grade level, or use one grade up? Thanks.
KellyBean
I can not commnet on RS but I use Spellin WOrkout for my third grader. We review the words together and compose a sentence with each, but the workbook is done independtly. Level E would proabably be the 5th grade book. GalmiBorn
I'm using R&S with my 3rd and 4th graders this year. They both like it and so do I. The 4th grade book is much better than the third, requires more thinking skills and really applying spelling rules. They do occasionally include a KJ Bible word that can get a bit confusing, but I just help with the answer and we move on. We did Spelling Workout for a bit earlier on but it just seemed like busy work to me although the word lists were good.
Juliegmom
I am currently using SWO and like it ok. My daughter enjoys the activities, but she has yet to be challenged. She is a natural speller. I've heard that R&S is a bit more challenging in the way the student works with the words. We may be switching to R&S spelling next year. lbakos
We switched from SWO to R&S this year. My dd did not like all of the various activities in SWO, they became an annoyance to her. She has been doing great with R&S. We both prefer the layout of each lesson much better compared to SWO and I think it's more challenging for her. For R&S I would stick with grade level. But you can always view examples of each book on their website and go from there.
Ellie
Although SWO is pretty decent, I prefer Spelling by Sound and Structure because of the activities. Even natural spellers can benefit from the activities. And yes, I'd go with the grade level. The spelling lists may seem simple, but the activities are very challenging (and useful).
