ILiveInFlipFlops Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 We have Settlers and we love love love it, but it's too much for DD7. I was looking at things like the Ticket to Ride and Agricola games, but they look like they're more for older kids/adults. Is that accurate or can they be adapted somehow? Can anyone recommend a game that would be fun for adults, DD10, and DD7? Thanks! Quote
Stacia Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Apples to Apples Jr. http://www.amazon.com/Apples-Junior-Game-Crazy-Comparisons/dp/B00112CHD4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354555803&sr=8-1&keywords=apples+to+apples+junior Quote
AlmiraGulch Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 I was also going to say Apples to Apples Jr. We all really enjoy it. We also have fun with Kids Battle the Grownups Quote
BigMamaBird Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Our 7 year old plays the regular Apples to Apples with us and loves it! She does need occasional help with some of the trickier words though. I got Ticket to Ride the USA version for Dh for Christma so we'll see how it goes over with the kids. Quote
Kendall Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Ticket to Ride USA gets my vote. My daughter that turned 8 this summer has been playing Ticket to Ride since she was 7. I'm sure I've had others playing it at 7 but I don't remember for sure. I think it is a good one because older ones/adults like it, yet a younger one can play and enjoy it. You won't need to adapt it at all unless your 7 year old isn't reading. There isn't much reading-only the city names. My teen/20's kids love Ticket to Ride, but aren't crazy about Apples to Apples. They play it when we choose it as a family, but they don't ask for it. My 10 and under crowd asks for A to A (we have the JR version I think) and we enjoy it for large gatherings. HTH, Kendall Quote
Kendall Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 One more thing - we really like Ticket to Ride USA it with the 1910 expansion. It adds tickets and gives larger sized cards of what is in the original (though maybe the newer copies of T to R have the larger cards already. With the expansion it is fun with 2 people and 5 people(and in between). We also loved the game before the expansion though! Quote
Belacqua Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 SET (the card game). Younger kids are often insanely good at it, but it's still fun for adults. Quote
Jan in SC Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Quirkle, set, amazing labyrinth, apples to apples, ricocheting robots, monopoly, Dutch blitz, creationary, ticket to ride, Marco polo, word quest, yhatzee, clue Quote
happi duck Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 I agree with Set. Spot It is also fun and rowdy for mixed ages. Quote
lynn Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 My dd likes yahtzee, uno, sorry, connect 4. Quote
fraidycat Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 My DS6 likes Uno, Apples to Apples Jr., Clue, Sequence Quote
higginszoo Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Agreeing with Apples to Apples, Set, Uno ... if Settlers doesn't hold your 7 year old's attention, then Agricola won't either. Ticket to Ride might be ok, though. Other options would be TransAmerica or TransEuropa -- kind of like Ticket to Ride, but plays a bit more simply and more quickly, so better for shorter attention spans. If they're reading fairly well, then one of the Fluxx games might work. My dc have also liked Bang! and Bohnanza at that age. Quote
scrappyhappymama Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Ticket to Ride is by far our favorite game. I recommend it so highly because it is truly fun for both parents and kids, and kids from 7+ can actually play competitively. We love Settlers too, but it has definitely been a little too much conceptually for our boys at 7. Our newest favorite is Carcassonne. To me, it is similar to Settlers in play, but conceptually more like Ticket to Ride, so it's one that a 7 year old could enjoy as well. Quote
redheadmom Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 My 7 yr old likes to play Uno, Payday, Clue and Sequence. He also likes to play card games like Rook; he understands how to play but isn't great at strategy. Quote
justLisa Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 We play dice games and gamble. My kids can clean my clock playing card games. They also like Apples to Apples, Chess, Chinese Checkers, Backgammon and Aggrivation. I'm trying to think of what others. Quote
Farrar Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 We all enjoy Clue, Sequence, In a Pickle, Set, Uno... We also have a game called Who, What, Where that is enjoyed by all. And funny. Quote
justLisa Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Oh yeah another one we like is Skip bo. I don't know why I love that card game so much Quote
Cinder Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 My 7yo enjoys Blokus, Uno, Farkle, Mille Bornes, Sorry, Monopoly (though she's not so good at counting money yet and her idea of collecting properties is to get one of each color  ). Quote
Devan Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 We like Dizios, even the adults have fun playing it. Ours are 7,5,4 and 3 so we needed something the younger ones can play too. Uno is good for all ages, and I've heard tons of raves about Ticket to Ride. Quote
history_junkie Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Qwirkle has already been mentioned, but that is a favorite in my family. My 8 year old sister is actually one of the best players! Quote
LostSurprise Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Agricola may be a bit much but most 7 year olds can play Ticket to Ride. Zooloretto (if it looks to hard it comes in Zooloretto mini) Bohnanza Space Beans Faces Incan Gold For Sale Survive: Escape from Atlantis Bombay Chateau Rocquefort Word on the Street (in a group) King of Tokyo Castle Panic Forbidden Island Saboteur Quote
Jilly Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 We like Sushi Roll at our house. It's great for all ages. Quote
Carrie12345 Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Kids Catan! http://www.amazon.com/MayFair-Games-4098996-Kids-Catan/dp/B0006HCVX6 But ouch! I'm pretty sure we didn't pay that much! Quote
MrsMommy Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Another vote for Forbidden Island. Ticket to Ride is my favorite game (and DH's), but the children still need a lot of prompting to play it successfully. Forbidden Island is fun because it's cooperative. Quote
Julie Smith Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 We have Settlers and we love love love it, but it's too much for DD7. The "Farmers of the moor" expansion adds a lot to the game. I personally think ticket to ride is boring. But many people here love it. Your 7 year old should have no trouble playing it. Quote
Julie Smith Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Kids Catan! http://www.amazon.com/MayFair-Games-4098996-Kids-Catan/dp/B0006HCVX6 But ouch! I'm pretty sure we didn't pay that much! This game is beautiful. But it is pretty much just a little more complicated then snakes and ladders. There is a version of Catan for older kids. I think it is called junior Catan. Quote
Khselee Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I saw In a Pickle up there, but that's definitely a favorite in our house, and has been since DS was about 5. I really like how it makes you think and be creative! Quote
LucyStoner Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Blockus, Set, Scrabble Slam, Stratego, Battleship. Quote
ProudGrandma Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 we are getting Pic Wits from Mindware for Christmas this year (we have an 8, 10 and 12 year old)....it's basically Apples to Apples with goofy silly pitures.... Quote
raceNzanesmom Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 My youngest loves SkipBo, Blokus, Rummikub, Sorry and Mexican Train played with Dominoes. For two player games he loves Checkers, Battleship, Othello, War (card game), and is learning Chess. Quote
KatieJ Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Monopoly Deal is a card game with Monopoly properties. The rules are completely different. We have been playing with our Grandson for a few years now. Quote
jujsky Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 My kids find Ticket To Ride more confusing than Settlers -- probably because it's difficult to keep track of the routes you want to use AND strategize, AND rethink everything if your planned route gets blocked. Agricola is really difficult and frustrating. I bought it because it had good reviews, had to watch several on-line tutorials to figure out how to play the game, and found that by the time you are finally able to start doing something and you're making any kind of progress at all, the game is over. I thought it was just me, but I gave it to my brother (my way-smarter than me brother) and he found the same thing, only he's sick and enjoys being frustrated while he plays games. Carcassone is accessible for a 7 year-old and isn't boring for adults. So is Bohnanza, which is a card-collecting game. Quote

I find the expansion, "Farmers on the Moor" adds alot to the game. It is confusing to learn. But that is why I married, "The Rule Dictator". He will happily read the rules of a game just for fun before figuring out if he wants to buy it. But I admit I don't recommend the game Agricola to just anyone. One fun game not mentioned was Dominion. We played that tons. My husband, "The Rule Dictator" even made a video explaining how to play. But you son would have to be a reader to play the game. A great family fun game also not mentioned here. (If I remember correctly) is Dixit. No reading required, and it takes about 2 minutes to learn how to play. http://tabletop.geekandsundry.com/episodes/dixit-leo-chu-casey-mckinnon-and-beth-riesgraf-join-wil-on-tabletop-episode-12/ If you are curious to see how, "Ticket to Ride" plays: http://tabletop.geekandsundry.com/episodes/colin-ferguson-plays-ticket-to-ride-with-wil-wheaton-anne-wheaton-and-amy-dallen/ One game my boys liked at that age was "Star Fares of Catan". I feel it's a bit easy then the stanard Catan. You also get little ships to move around and a giant ship to shake. You can also buy guns. Lots of guns :) and clip them onto your ship. Quote
ILiveInFlipFlops Posted December 4, 2012 Author Posted December 4, 2012 Wow, thanks everyone!!! We actually own (and never play) a lot of the games people mentioned here, so I'm kind of thinking I might just wait and we'll play a game we already own and haven't played yet on New Year's Day instead! If I do buy a new game, I'm thinking of Carcassonne, because we have some adult friends that we also play with, and that will do double duty. I really appreciate all the input and suggestions. Now I have plenty of time to do more research before Christmas 2013 :D Quote
