hsbeth
If she hasn't read "Across Five Aprils" before I'd recommend it. It's one the easier side for a high school student, but worth reading.
Candid
What do you want? Historical fiction or fiction of the time period? I use only literature of the time period, but it rarely covers things going on then.

Sebastian (a lady)
Dd is coming up to the civil war in her history timeline. I need some "must reads" to fill out her program We spent several months of the summer and early fall on a Civil War unit. As a history text they read Battle Cry of Freedom by McPherson. For literature they read the first section of Uncle Tom's Cabin (I think it was through chapter 10. It was everything through Tom being sold by his original owner. I would have loved to have them read the whole thing, but it is long and I wanted them to read other books too. So we only had time for a smackerel.) Then they read Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas and Red Badge of Courage. They also read a couple chapters of Hard Tack and Coffee. The Teaching Company set on The American Civil War was very helpful.
